Just got my new JPI730 installed and it's absolutely lovely. I just noticed one thing that I found odd. The oil temp severely lags behind my analog oil temp gauge. Although my analog sensor showed that the oil was warm and good for takeoff the digital one was still resting at ambient temperature. I thought that maybe it didn't get hooked up, but then about 5 minutes into the flight it slowly rose to agree with the analog gauge.

Is this just due to the placement of the digital probe and how it's going to be? Is it missing thermal grease?

Without knowing your engine, but my 830 was installed on the top front, so it would get plenty of cool air, the factory was on the back where it got none.

I’d almost bet money that your new temperature sensor is installed in a position that doesn’t get warm oil until a thermostatic valve opens and your other one isn’t.

Is it installed in the location the manufacturer recommended?

Is your JPI approved as a primary? Lose the analog gauge and put the JPI sender in the factory location. Or if you really want to use your analog instrument to judge your digital one? Calibrate the analog gauge with a hot pot of oil and a good thermometer so you can establish what temps make the needle move where.

Nope not primary. Way too much $$$ ;)

You gotta go up to the 830 or something for primary?

930. I have a buddy with one. I hated how slow the refresh rate was. I'm pretty happy with my analog gauges plus basic engine monitor despite Stewart's displeasure

i have no displeasure. You have an inaccurate instrument and asked why.
