Jetting Thru the Grand Canyon

Back in the 50's. Paul Mantz flew a B-25 through the canyon with the Cinerama cameras mounted in the nose. It was almost like being in the plane yourself it was so realistic.

Where's THAT footage? Would love to see it. John, thanks for posting the T-33 footage--wow.

Thats wild. I suspect it helps to have a plane that can go vertical should you run up a box canyon. It also looks like it might acutally be some good training for missions in afganastan although I guess helicopters now fill that role.

Here's a link to Paul Mantz and his Cinerama B-25. The flight through the canyon so impressed me that I had forgotten that it was just part of a flight across America until I viewed the link. The Cinerama process was so realistic that people got airsick while watching. You would see the pilots in the audience since they would be pulling their stick or yoke back when the canyon walls loomed near. I saw the film back in 55 or 56 when I was a new pilot and the memories stayed fresh through the years. I'd love to see the film again.

Earlier this decade I was the river ranger on the nearby San Juan River. IR266 overflew the river and often we had B-1B's from ? deviate to fly down the river canyon. Those suckers are loud

I've flown IR126 (266 the other way) in both Buff's and Bone's. Always fun finding a house boat close to route centerline when we crossed Lake Powell south of Bull Frog Basin on a Sunday morning. :yikes:

IR126 was our way into the Nellis MOA and bombing ranges.

I was from Grand Forks ND and Rapid City SD when I was flying IR126. But all the Buff and Bone bases used the same route.
