Jets Tagged With Graffiti

Go to a different FBO, of course. One where they have a night watchman on staff. People will stop taking their planes to places where they're susceptible to vandals and start taking them to places they know it'll be safe and eventually, as in any market, the competition will drive innovation and before you know it, every jet-servicing FBO will "change their lighting" and install cameras and guards and other security features. No need for government intervention here, folks.

I have no idea as its all I can do to afford to fly a clapped out rental Cherokee. I have zero point of reference to a million dollar flying machine. Are there really no options? Different airport that is perhaps a little farther, but safer? Better planning? I really don't know, I am spitballing here. I would think if I could afford something like that, I could afford to secure it, but, who knows.
Van Nuys is a pretty big, busy, corporate airport. I would not have necessarily expected it to have happened there, although it is in a pretty crappy neighborhood.

The article said that two of the jets that were tagged were in a hangar. So that means that a hangar that houses multi million dollar jets has no alarm, no security cameras, a lock that is easily broken (or no lock at all) and no staff to watch over these machines. In those cases the FBOs (or their insurance) had better be footing the bill.

It was the "Airplane Repo" guys! :yesnod:

Yeah, its just not that easy. It sounds great on a message board, but in reality it's not.
In addition, how do you really know just how secure a particular FBO is? If they gave a reputation, sure. If not, it's a guess. If an airport lacks security, odds are good it's the entire ga area, not just one FBO.
It should also be noted, MANY of the ga airports I used to go had only 1 FBO.

This...

For the people who suggested repositioning, even only considering DOC, a reposition is going to probably be at least $1,000 out and back. Then how do you know the place you went is "safer"?

What?? You live out in the country and don't spend much time in big cities do you?

Get a critical mass of white people spending time on the airport and the problem mostly goes away. Trying to store expensive delicate things near a ghetto is going to have failures. The other option is to gentrify the neighborhood around the airport. Of course then they will want to close the airport.
Or hire work release inmates as security.

We need common-sense paint safety laws. Registration, waiting periods, purchase limits. That would do it.

Yes, for the children.......

Oh, and high, prohibitive taxes on paints, and micro chipping the paint brush to the user so others can't use your paint brush.

I don't know. I am just having a conversation. But, do you think the owners of these airplanes would choose to reposition with the benefit of forethought? Again, I'm not trying to pick a fight, just trying to think it through.

Some owners are more security minded than others. There was no way to predict that this was going to happen, or that it wouldn't happen somewhere else. And it's not an epidemic of tagging or anything.

I can't speak for Everskyward's company, but I used to work for one of the larger fractional ownership companies.

My guess would be yes, IF it was clearly known as a safety issue FBO ramp. That said, if that was the case I doubt they would be going there in the first place.

I don't know of any FBO ramps designated as a risky "do not park" area. It is likely a pretty random thing that can happen anywhere. That said, I would bet certain airports are more likely to be hit than others.

But would KVNY have been on that list?

We have never moved an airplane out of vny for security purposes to the best of my knowledge. We were encouraged to use security tape at certain airports however, and it was mandatory in Mexico.

Wonderful. What we need is TSA at GA airports. Not.

Agreed...All TSA would do is make sure that the Taggers take off their shoes and use the smaller cans of paint with fewer fluid ounces.

To my knowledge, the only place the owners of the airplane wouldn't let us take it was Haiti.

I have been to some pretty shady places in my day, but I would definitely take pause at Haiti!!!

Ummm... that would be because this an aviation forum and it's about airplanes and people here really like airplanes and many of us own airplanes and we can empathize.

What does Tamir Rice have to do with airplanes?

I always thought it was flat out ignorance to suggest that private jets only benefit the 1%ers. Those jets employee pilots, mtc personnel, dispatchers, schedulers, fuelers, line guys, limo drivers, caterers, hotel staff, and likely many more I failed to mention.

As I said earlier in this thread, I flew business jets for 20 years. Without the 1% owner guy, many people (myself included) would not have had a job.

Dang. I've got that fool on ignore and you guys had to go and quote him.

Nice responses though!

I am laughing at those calling Van Nuys a ghetto. Have those saying this really been there? I land there and walk a couple blocks to a diner I like to eat at. This part of Van Nuys s not a ghetto, if you want to see a real ghetto I would be happy to drop you off in one.

I haven't seen anyone call it a ghetto, but than again I haven't scoured the thread. I know I haven't referred to it as such. That said, aren't the big porn studios right near the airport?? :D:yes::D

We used to park at...???? Which was a stones throw to the Airtel. I would walk to the roach coach or to "Beeps" (still have my card). The shops along the way all had bars on the windows. Just sayin'.

Compton? Hawthorne wasn't so great back in the day.

You are correct, it was not called a ghetto, don't know why that's what I thought was said. It was called a crappy neighborhood. Some might call it that but I have no problem walking the streets around there, I have even walked to Beeps at night from the airport. Yes there are bars on Windows but several neighborhoods have them. Compton and Whiteman are airports I wouldn't walk at night.

Nobody has mentioned hiring a sniper to hide at the airport and shoot the bastards.

Sheesh... do I have to think of everything?! :)

That was me who called it a crappy neighborhood. But many airports are in crappy neighborhoods. I would walk around there during the day but not at night, and I'm probably less careful about stuff like that than I should be.

Probably me that called it ghetto. No never been, was going off what someone else indicated. If the hood ain't that bad tear down the fences put in picnic tables and let the place self watch with middle aged dork plane spotters and the like. Build a little kids playground(not basketball courts) on the edge of the airport. Best security is filling a place with good regular people.

VanNuys is in a bad area. Interesting fact, it's the porn Capitol of the world.

Question - if someone commits a theft or vandalism at an airport like KVNY, does it become a more serious federal crime?..

Interesting that the spray painting on a couple of 1%'ers Million Dollar jets causes the OP such concern, when his link also has an update on Tamir Rice, which apparently causes the OP no such concern....

Priorities ......

This one percent BS is exactly the attitude that makes people think property crime is OK - as long as it's done to "the rich". And this attitude is rampant right now.

If you fly then, to someone, YOU are rich. By your rationale it would be justified, or at least not that big a deal, for someone to destroy your property. Let's see if you feel the same when it happens to you.

The fact that this isn't the worst thing that happened today doesn't mean it isn't bad. Christ.

Wtf? Racism is alive and well.

Hope you have an all-white New Year!

perhaps because this isn't the spin zone.

I see you've seen One Six Right? It's the only video that I have on my iPad.

That cuts both ways...

Does the name Reginald Denny mean anything to you?:dunno::rolleyes:

Created in California, pumped (yeah I used that word purposefully) out of servers in Boulder.

Not kidding. Largest porn streaming company in the world is from the liberal capital of Colorado.

Whole bunch of storage company sales guys have made their nut (again with the puns) selling gear to that place.
