Jet pack guy near LAX caught on camera

I'd say hoax and squeeze the pilot who filmed it for more info. Anyone worth his salt would orbit/follow the thing. If it is heavier than air, its endurance would probably be very short, so you follow it to wherever it lands. If it is LTA, it'll just drift with the wind and you should be able to figure that out pretty quickly.

you really can’t blame the pilot for not deviating near LAX airspace.

He was about 10 miles away. Approach might have worked with him. Or might not. You would think they would be very motivated to put an end to whatever is going on.

If I'm in a Cessna sorry but I'm not about to start orbiting Tony stark, I've seen the movies...

As long as you don't SHOOT at him, then you're safe!

Trick is, get him holding onto the under-belly, then apply non-stop left and right rudder ... he'll clean the oil blow by off the bottom of your plane:p

Jet packs carry only a few minutes of fuel?

And the purported sighting was several miles offshore over cold water?

Exactly. I'm thinking helium filled balloon with some fan thrusters and a dump valve. Float it up to altitude. Use the thrusters to move it around a bit to give the impression that it is doing something, and dump the thing when you run outta battery power.

I would be suited up like a motoGP racer. Untethered, just looks like a cool way to commit suicide.

Airspace upon airspace upon airspace. Class bravo all around, Hawthorne and Torrance towered airports, controllers nice but congested airspace. Long Beach, right next door, has an air base with 27 helicopters - the la taxpayers bought them twenty something brand new AS350’s to train deputies from zero to hero while building a flotilla as well as a couple of Puma’s for, you know, those “executive” details (some of the missions I’ve witnessed are pretty weak sauce). They can certainly go hang out and find this fine lad when spotted. Hawthorne police has a whirlybird, so does Lakewood in the área not to mention CHP (aaa with a badge), in case those LA deputies are too busy chauffeuring important county supervisors.
