Jay on Zulu

. . . . . . mm, yeah, that's probably about as good a description as possible under the circumstances. Especially with the picture as evidence.

Jay's the man!

Every time I put them on (from now on) I'll think of Jay. :yikes:

I'd be happy to relieve you of that burden. :D

Besides...i can think of worse things...Jay's an enthusiastic and knowledgeable pilot. A CFI-SP. And an all around good guy.

If I didn't own a set already, I'd be sold!!!!:D

Very cool, Jay!

You guys love them that much?

I got a set, but I still like my DC's better. The DC fit my head better than the Zulus. But I have to admit the Zulus are way better than any other LS headset. I do like the bluetooth interface!

Well, the best analogy I can come up with is Adolph Hitler must have had some good ideas, but they were over shadowed (obscured) by what he was known for in the end. Jay may be the nicest guy in the world, best pilot since Lindberg, but dressed like that obscures any possibility believing it.

No offese Jay, I just call em as I see um.

I have not found any other headset that's as quiet as the Zulu but there are several that come close enough that it's not a big deal. On the fit/comfort issue, there will never be one headset that's most comfortable for every person. Like I said earlier, if your head is small to medium width, the Zulu's are very comfortable (for me slightly more so than Bose) but for many folks the Zulu is not the best fit. BTW, one other issue worth mentioning is that no matter what the fit, the Zulus offer significantly more passive noise reductions when the batteries die than the Bose. I suspect that DC's are more like the Zulu in this aspect but I haven't ever experienced that with them.

Why did you have to say that? The only reason I'm going is to see the local's react to Jay's flightsuit.

"You ain't gonna believe what we seen today, Bubba. Me and Merle Gene wuz fishin after he got off at Walmart. They wuz this little-bitty airplane what landed out there on the grass by the river, jist down from the dam. So we drove up closter to see if it was for real or one of them radio models.

Well, we seen it when that little glass thang on top kindly flipped open, and I swear on a stack if I'm lyin' I'm dyin' this human looking thang wearin' this plastic hat like them hockey players on TV, and a white kindly spiderman lookin' suit kindly clumb out on the wing thang. 'Cept he didn't look like no spider and either had a hell of set on him or had just crapped his britches, best we could tell. Big wad of sumthin' down there. Anyway, bunch of other people there acted like they knowed him and it wuz OK, otherwise we would have just shot his ass on the spot and called the sheriff."

Jay, will all due respect, get a new flight suit.

.... and a new aviator.

Geico and Wayne, you may laugh at Jay (certainly it's no secret that many have before), but you don't need to be jerks about it. I'd get in a plane with him flying it over either of you any day, especially his plane. It's quite nice.

I might not buy a Zulu headset just because it's endorsed by him, though. I like my 20xlc. :)

You know, I'd expect comments like that (and your initial comment) from the general population. I expect better from people in this group.

Come on...lets chill guys..

  • Jay is a really nice guy
  • The tron suit is indeed funny
  • There is a line between joking and being an ass
That is all folks.

Stupid comments. So easy, a caveman could do it.

I don't think Wayne's trying to be mean... he's just a keen observer of the human condition, and a smart-azzed commenter, too.

And you would be correct relative to intent. I figure Jay has been having fun with that get-up for as long as he's been wearing it, and has had more than one "local" look at him funny. I still think he should have worn it for his CFI ride.

Heck, I've been laughed at on national TV by better-known folks than those two... :D

...and, FWIW, I thought Wayne's post was pretty funny.

You sure? You'll have to try a Zulu again. All kidding aside, I really do think they're the best headset you can get.

And no, Lightspeed isn't paying me a nickel.

Yeah man. I really like my Zulu. My BOse X headset is now relegated to pax usage. Zulu is more comfortable, plus bluetooth is great. Given the price advantage, I think Zulu wins.

The Zulu ANR is really good, that passive is not so great but that is to be expected, it is not a ding. Fit is an individual thing. I switch back and forth a little with the Zulu and the DC 10-13XLs. But I find myself with the DCs. The fit issue I have with the Zulu is when I turn my head the ear seal breaks.

Tell you what, when I take you for an Aztec ride we'll take your Lightspeeds along and I'll try it again. I tried it a few times in the Mooney and didn't find it to do noise canceling any better than the 20xlc. I'd be interested to see how it compares in the Aztec. :)

Thing is, I can buy two 20xlc headsets for the price of one Zulu, and when I've used the Bose I do like it better (and 1 Bose = 2.5 20xlc). For the time being, I need to acquire more headsets anyway (I only have 1 spare, which isn't so great in a 6-seater aircraft), so I'm more interested in buying a couple more 20xlcs, and then maybe get a Zulu or Bose for me. The Bluetooth would be nice, especially since I use my cell phone for music, but the little wire I've been using for the past year and a half has been doing just fine.

one thing that i really appreciated was the trade up program where lightspeed gave me full new price value for my 30-3Gs towards the Zulu. considering my 30-3Gs had something like 1500 hrs of flying on them over 3ish years I was happy to send them in.

Ted I think they've expanded that trade in program to the other Lightspeed models now, may be worth looking in to.

Well, for full new value trade on my 20xlc, I would buy a zulu. Although mine's only had about 300 hours of flying over a year and a half. :)

Just checked their website - trading up for me would cost $550. No thanks, not worth it unless my headset gets really worn out first. :)

I've gotten this reaction occasionally, and I've never understood it. The reasons may be obvious to you, but it's far from obvious to me why one activity I enjoy should affect anything about other activities I enjoy.

Ted, I have two 25XLCs a Twenty 3G and a Thirty 3G in addition to one Zulu. In my Baron the Zulu is slightly quieter than the 25XLC and Thirty 3G (both of which are pretty equal) and a lot quieter than the Twenty 3G which is supposed to be slightly better than the 20XLc.

Where are the "These guys are the greatest! My Lightspeeds broke 3 times and each time they fixed them right up at no charge!' posts? :D

So far (1.5 years of use) my Zulu hasn't experienced any breaking and I haven't been real careful with it. Then again I'm pretty much the only one using that headset and most of the breakage that's occurred on the plastic LS models has been from other users although I did break a couple things early on with those. FWIW, on my last Angel flight the pax broke two LS headsets. One broke the top of the yoke where it slides into the headband by trying to pull the earcups about 1.5 feet apart while putting it on over a hat and the other tried to rotate the mic boom beyond it's intended range and broke that on the inside. I guess I'll have to add something about headsets to my pax briefing or get tougher headsets.

...and with that, Adam has guaranteed himself more right seat time than Missa. :D

i think i had a battery box issue on my 303Gs but i fixed that with superglue.

no issues with my zulus yet.
