This allows the engines to be closer together which should improve controllability on one engine and reduce Vmc.

That's exactly what it is. I thought it was dumb when Dornier did it and it's dumb now. It looks like a lot of CG issues for little to no benefit.

Generally speaking, with the push/pull configuration, it's pretty inefficient as the rear engine is having to bite into air that is quite disturbed by the front engine. Plus there can be cooling issues.

As to the design of the Jabiru setup the main issue would be dealing with that much weight being so far forward on the plane. I suspect that issue wouldn't be so bad if the whole airplane were designed from the start with that in mind. Trying to bolt that onto an existing design would likely result in quite a bit of sacrifice trying to sort out the CG.
