Iowa State football players did heavy lifting this morning – but it was sandbags they were hauling, not free weights.

“Some of them are sandbagging around the Jacobson Athletic Building,” athletic department spokesman Tom Kroeschell said this morning. “They’re doing it for precautionary reasons.”

Parking lots between the Jacobson Building and Hilton Coliseum were flooded.

I flew over the flooding last night. There sure is a lot of water. I took some pictures while I was up.

move in for the students in the next week or two could be a real pain. matt had the skunk river in his veggie garden when it is usually about 1/2 to 3/4 mile away.

Yes, protecting the football field is absolutely critical... Why, I mean if the field was fouled and the players couldn't practice they would have to cancel the classes for the entire physics department!

<sarcasm off>

Perhaps, using the players to sandbag for critical public safety buildings, hospitals, etc. might be a more effective use of manpower, eh?

Most of the administration type buildings are on higher ground in town - by luck or good planning, I don't know. About the only 'critical' type of building I can think of in that area is power plant on the edge of campus, but even it is higher than Hilton and the football admin building. I'm guessing the athletic admin building/practice facility has the most $$/sq ft to lose along the flood route.

Oh.. Almost forgot - I bet CyRide (city bus system that I used to drive for part-time) is pretty well flooded. The garage was a stone's throw away from the flooding 'creek' at normal water levels. It was probably gone long before the water got up to the football stadium, though. Shame, too... CyRide just built a new million-dollar administration building that opened last spring.

is downtown des moines flooded again too? It was all underwater just a few years ago after saylorville filled up.

No, Des Moines is not threatened by this flooding system. Saylorville still has some storage capacity left in it.

Many of you may recognize this piece of property.

Looks like the water has already gone down a bit. I remember seeing a pic where the tents in the commuter lot behind Hilton were almost under water.

Can you say "mosquitoes"?

ive also heard there could be more rain coming. that could be really really bad.

I had a dream last night that I got called back to CyRide to help out (I haven't worked there in almost a year). When I got back to Ames, there were piles of sand all over the place and Lincoln Way around 6th Street was a river. I remember getting into a bus to start driving, but Rachel must have kicked me in the back or something b/c the next thing I remember, I was trying out for a basketball team coached by Phil Jackson.

Maybe I should cut back on my crack intake right before bed...

well i had a dream that i was outfitted with high definition cameras and sent into a wasp swarm for research purposes. some BS about needing HD video of wasps in flight. All I know is that I was happy to wake up!

Ames was on the Today show this morning. Lots of water and it sounds like more on the way :(
