iPad mini: It's alive!!!

Any idea if it's the same size, or will we have to buy all new holders, etc?

From a casual inspection of the tech specs, looks like they made it a little thinner and a little wider and a little heavier.

Just put in an order for a 256gb WiFi model. Hopefully it will get here before SnF.
 
I've got mine on order. Doesn't look like there are any cases out yet I guess it was a total surprise announcement.

It's exactly the same size as the Mini 4, so all the cases that are already out will still work.
 
I'm a little disappointed that they didn't go with the edge-to-edge screen and Face ID, but I'm glad that they at least used a current processor, which they haven't done since the Mini 2. The Mini 3 and 4 were both a generation out of date when they were introduced, which is probably one reason why sales weren't great. I bought a 2 because of that, even after the 3 came out because the only difference was Touch ID.

Oh, and now I can get double the storage I had in the 2, for $150 less than I bought the 2 for.

They might do the bigger screen/FaceID next year, but at this point, anyone with a Mini should probably upgrade. It's been four years since the last Mini!
 
stupid question but when u order one do u have to order the pen separately? so tack on another hundid?

That’s a good question. I just placed my order and I don’t recall seeing anything about that.
On the apple forum people are complaining that it uses an old pencil. (1 vs 2 )

Also when you place the order, nowhere does it say “5”. It just says mini.

Typical when they aren't selling more than one generation concurrently. For example the Air is not the Air 3 and the regular iPad is not the iPad 7.

I don't even see anything about the Mini 5 on Wikipedia yet? Maybe that was the source of your confusion - The 3 and 4 were slightly different in size.
 
I wouldn't expect the pencil to be included, it's an add-on accessory. I can't think of any reason I need it, so I didn't order one.

Didn't think about this purchase much at all, I've been waiting on this for well over a year now and I knew I was going to buy it unless they made some obnoxious change that ruined it for my use. Will wait on the case for a couple days to see what pops up on amazon now that it's available.... and just in case we find out they aren't actually the same size&shape as the 4.
 
Anyone have an idea of the performance difference between the mini 2 and the mini 5?
 
If I use this primarily for GP or FF, is 64 GB sufficient for US VFR & IFR charts?

with Apple, everything is extra. 64GB is included; 128 is another $100; 256 is another $100 on top of that. They don't put in memory card slots because they want your money, and memory can't be added, you have to buy a new one to get more memory. Meanwhile, my Samsung tablet uses as many memory cards as I feel like buying; I bought two 64GB cards for $35 . . . Hardly used it yet, but it's nice to have. Then again, I'm not loaded down with music and movies, either, just a half dozen Sectionals and 8 or so states' worth of Approach Plates.

Yes... Even 16GB should be enough for the charts (you need a 32GB device because the app, OS, etc will take up some room)... BUT.

I have made it my personal policy to always max out both storage and RAM when buying new gadgets, because if you don't, by the time you need to upgrade one of those, the cost of upgrading usually isn't economical when compared to a new device. I find that by buying with as much storage and memory as possible from the start, my devices last longer.

As an example, who would have foreseen ForeFlight's new 3D view? That takes up a fair bit of storage as well I think (they don't list download sizes like they used to), and if you had a 32GB device you might not be able to take advantage of it. Who knows what innovations might come along in the next few years that you might want to take advantage of, or maybe you'll find an entirely new use for it? :dunno:

The ForeFlight installation on my 16G iPhone uses about 3G, but I only download charts for my area.

When they still listed the sizes, a full CONUS download was about 7 gigs, so you needed 14 around the cycle change.

The new mini? (The one that's on Apple's site right now?)

Mainly that it's got much newer guts. Even the Mini 4 was getting painfully slow. It sounds like they've upgraded to their latest display technology as well, so it probably is nicer to look at.

Is there any real world difference why I’d want to get rid of my 4 that already runs foreflight seamlessly and browses the net as fast as my fingers or ISP can go?

I mean maybe give me more screen in the same form factor, double the battery life, or make one of the cameras thermal or something, just seem like a upgrade just to upgrade for me, I don’t play the latest video games, video edit, mine coins,or anything really power intensive on it.

Unless I’m missing something I’ll keep my 4 and invest that money in 100LL.

Every model of the Mini that Apple has ever sold has been officially called the "iPad Mini". The rest of us tag on the number when we're talking about a specific generation of it so that we're clear what we're talking about. ;)

So, while Apple is calling it the "Mini" the rest of us are calling it the "Mini 5."
