Best Buy has some wifi only and some Cellular iPad mini 3's $150 off today in their Deal Of The Day. That is usually a 24 hour only special. Good luck!

Hmmm, is a wifi only unit going to limit its usefulness in the cockpit? I am planning to switch to one from Droid as the unit I have is unreliable. Think I'll check it out..

Edit: they have them for $350 w/ 64Gb wifi only & $580 w/ 128 Gb wifi/cell.

I would advise the cellular unit since it has the built-in GPS if you can afford it. Then you will not need an external GPS for full flight functionality.

Looks like a good deal, untill you realize it's no good in the cockpit without an additional external GPS I would go with the cellular unit.

Yep, that was my concern. Does the cellular have to be activated /on a plan for the functionality of the GPS to work? My iPhone 6 and Droid both have cell plans and work fine (except the droid repeatedly drops the BT to my GDL39). iPHone is rock solid, which is why I want the mini.

As far as I have ever read, you do not need to activate the cellular portion.

Absolutely not.

We buy our iPads with cellular mainly to get the GPS. Only twice have we activated the cellular when traveling, and with WiFi so common now, and the iPhone 6+ screen so large now, I doubt we'll ever find the need to do that again.

Correct. You don't have to activate the cellular to use the GPS. However, mixed reports of the onboard GPS reliability in flight. In my 182 I loose the signal about 10-20% of the time.

Thanks for the clarifications. I have a Garmin Aera on my yoke for GPS. The mini I use primarily for traffic BT to my GDL39 (I leave the concentric rings up) and for EFB functions.

You do not need to activate it, but I did the T-mobile 200mb free deal which comes in handy from time to time.

You don't have to activate the cellular for the cellular iPad to use its GPS. I got the mini with the cellular and a retina screen (and cheaper than Best Buy, academic discount don't cha know). But why you wouldn't have the cellular hooked up is beyond me. Cost like ten bucks a month.

When we moved I switched to FIOS - less costly for the same TV service than TWC - and the internet was faster - plus - I got $200 off any tablet AND a $400 gift card.

I just bought a new 128gb Mini 3 yesterday with cell. 128gb was $529 with aq new 2 year agreement - then $200 off with the incentive - then the $400 gift card and voila - I left with a $12 credit on my Verizon statement - and a free 128gb iPad . . . . for simply paying the same amount to a cable company every month. . .

Ten bucks is a case of Natty Boh (on sale). Priorities, man!

Plus, grandfathered unlimited on a jailbroken phone to tether to.
