Hi everybody!

My name is Emma, and I'm 18 years old. I'm new to flying, but very anxious to get started in learning everything about aviation!
I logged my first hour in January on a C175 in Kansas City, and loved every minute of it. I recently moved to Ohio, and am looking around for the right flight school for me. I plan on starting next year when I can get approved for financing , and that seems so far away! But in the meantime, I want to learn everything I can to give me a head start once I start. So any advice you guys can give me would be great!

Now THAT is something to celebrate.

Welcome.

There are allot of scholarships for women fliers. Do a search and see what you can find. It will take a little effort to write essays or make videos but it may be the difference between sitting and dreaming and flying.

Congrats on your first flight!

Careful on financing flight related stuff, its expensive and initially won't have a high ROI, also many of the pilot finance places have high rates.

If you can get or use a low interest rate credit card that might be your best bet.

Smartest move is to just save up cash money

Welcome, Emma.

I think AOPA and EAA have flight financing programs available, but as I recall, they are way expensive. You might be better off with a local credit union, especially if your parents (or someone else) could co-sign for you.

Credit unions tend to be more accommodating toward loans for unusual purposes than banks are. I've walked into my credit union with some truly bizarre loan requests over the years, and have always walked out with the money in hand.

So looking ahead...You are always going to be stuck with the user ID "studentpilot96" now that you have created it. What are you going to change your handle to once you get your ticket?

Thank you all! I'm really glad to be a member here

I've never thought about trying for a scholarship, but i will defiantly be looking in to that. I have no credit right now, which might prove to be a problem in getting financed....so I will look in to the other options you mentioned. Aaaaaand I don't know what I'll change it too, didnt think that far ahead...oops! My bad!

The best financing I found was Pilot Finance, but I'm not sure I'll be approved because of the fact that I have no credit....

No need to change it. The day you know it all is the day you need to hang up your wings.

As a young lady, be sure to check out http://www.ninety-nines.org/ which is an international organization of women pilots.

Frequently, they offer scholarships of various denominations.

The FAA also had a list of Scholarships and Grants: https://www.faa.gov/education/student_resources/scholarships_grants/aviation_scholarships/

Thanks! I will definatly look into that

You're definitely better off with a regular bank or credit union. I tried Pilot Finance and their rates were ridiculous.

Credit Unions frequently offer scholarships. They also offer educational seminars (free) and counseling if you'll become a member (free). Take advantage now to get your credit score and credit in good shape.

The Ohio State Credit Union League offers several $3k scholarships for students. That would go a long way to defray your costs, but you might have to plan to go to college OR convince them that what you're doing should qualify you.

Credit Unions love young people. If you are earnest, sincere, and willing to work with someone, I bet you could find some help.

Applications for next year: http://www.ohiocreditunions.org/Pages/ChapterScholarships.aspx

And yes, I work for one. Good luck!

Do yourself a favor and do not go in Debt at 18yr. You might not even have the Credit worthiness to obtain a loan without your parents co signing.

No I won't be attending college. I want to do flight school full time. I haven't looked into a Credit Union yet, but if its better than Pilot Finance I will. I obviously don't know anything about Credit Unions, because i had no idea they offered anything like those things!
I would rather not go into debt...but I don't see any way around that right now. And I'd rather be in debt than not go to flight school!

if i had any say so i would also tell you don't go into debt to go flying.

you don't want to be in this position in 10 years or so

"With a few bills, and rent, just "break even" for me would be close to $70k. That's not living comfortably and flying every weekend, that's just "normal" expenses and a little extra. ...."

save your money and pay as you go
