Today's adventure for lunch. NY hotdogs. Sabretts was the tube meat of choice.

I got mine with slaw and brown mustard. There was ketchup on display and a few morons put it on their dogs. I wanted to slap their hands and berate them, but then I remembered that this was an uncultured tube meat slurry society! ;)

The dog was really good! But how can you screw up a hot dog? I mean other than putting ketchup on it?

My coworker got a Polish sausage like version. He liked it too.

Bun was excellent, warm, steamed not over cooked!!!

Good job NY on the dogs!

At least you didn't spit it out on the plate and send photos this time. :)

Sabretts are good. I like their jarred pushcart onions. You should really try a Nathan's, though (with onions, sauerkraut, and brown mustard). If you're doing a food tour of NYC, how about some clams on the half shell at Randazzo's in Sheepshead Bay?

If the plan is a culinary tour of NYC, you may never get out of town.
So much, so good.

I don't believe I've ever had a bad hot dog in NYC. But I usually take them with mustard, onions, and Tabasco. Sauerkraut makes me fart.

dirty water dogs, we used to call em. and I put ketchup on my ketchup, with a side of ketchup, on my hotdog and almost everything else I eat. as a kid I put ketchup on steak and my parents pretty much disowned me shortly after that. I don't do that anymore, but I'm a ketchup guy fo sho.

Sabrett is the quintessential NYC street dog - accept no substitutes.

Nathans is the classic Coney Island dog -

Both need to be natural casing, lord knows what meat inside - but both Kosher. Otherwise - you risk having a pale suburban substitute.

Ketchup on a hot dog violates the laws of the universe . . . you need those tomatoey onions and mustard - I saw a photo of a guy putting one in his mouth as United 95 crashed into the WTC. . . that was somehow sick to me.

That is the only thing I miss about The City.

Most of the best restaurants are in Brooklyn, by the way.

Il Bambino in Queens. OMG.

When I'm in Manhattan I usually have to stop every 10 blocks or so for another red hot with mustard and sauerkraut.

Il Bambino in Queens. OMG.

Queens is a close second, and is better for some ethnic dishes, if you want them authentic-style. Astoria's great for Afghan food, Ridgewood for Eastern European, Jamaica for West Indian, etc.

Born n raised nyc

Grey's Papaya or Papaya King.
Best in town hands down..
Sooooooo good!
I can feel the heartburn just thinking about it!

Tell them to go back to NJ. Newark is the home of the italian dog which is one in an oversized roll with the fries stuffed in it as well and a slathering of ketchup.

...I also put ketchup on my steak...that must REALLY set ya off!...mmmmm...steak dip...

I've never been to NY, have no plan to ever go, yet I still feel that ketchup on a hotdog is sacrilege.
