Last week I flew out to 35ME. Interesting; Matinicus Island, Maine, roughly 22 miles off the coast of Rockland. What a great group of people out there!
Photo #1 = the runway; notice the pitch.
(oh, that's the Camden, Maine Hills in the distance)
Photo #2 = Penobscot Air Service on the way in.
Photo #3 = Penobscot on the ground.
Photo #4 = He is smooooooth.

Check my follow-up to this post.

The island is 3/4 mile wide and 2 miles long. Walking along a trail, seemingly hidden in the trees I saw a gorgeous J-3 Cub, tail evident. As I walked around its propeller the plane was only 15 or so feet off the runway(Photo #1). Captain Ron Ames took his first flight in the 1947 J-3 when he was 5 years old when his father owned the plane. Cap'n Ron was pleased to show me the Sport Pilot Certificate he had received the day before I was there.
He had been grounded by medical problems. The plane had been recovered a couple years ago; beautiful bird. More photos are below.

The runway end and edge markers are very interesting: quite often, gallon paint cans, around which are attachments of red and green reflective plastics.
And yes, there is a public telephone in the "International Terminal."

Love it; will be going back for another visit.

HR.. reminds me of home.. not that I've flown to the island.. but a lot along the coast.. climbed that Camden mountain more than a few times... and sailed the bay off Lincolnville Beach.

I used to work for MIFS at AUG.

Looks like it was a beautiful day for flying and a great destination. Have fun!

It was much more interesting than prior Monhegan Island visits. The accompanying images are from Valerie's camera. Photo #1 is me, walking in from the end of the seawall; and those are huge blocks of granite and whatever. We had picnic-lunched at the inner end of the wall. During my hike out to the end my cell phone slipped out of my pocket and is now in a crevice between the blocks. I was able to get "down in there" but couldn't find to where it must have bounced.

One gentleman from New Zealand made his first visit to Matinicus in January, liked the island so much that within 15 minutes he bought an 1800s house which was in need of restoration. He's now restoring the house; and because of the tragedy of the island's post office having burned flat -- and was on property he leased to the Gov. -- he's probably going to get permission to have the post office lease space in the house he's restoring.
