Jessie and I are driving through DC today on our way home to Boston. While coming abeam of Andrew's, a white late model (45-60, in that range) Lear flew east to west over the highway. Following was 3 F-16s, in a staggered, asymetrical formation, The Lear swung around on a long final, the F-16s flew over the field and peeled off one at a time, circling to land.

Firstly, it was pretty cool to see! But, secondly, all I could think of (given the non-descript/civilian markings) was it was an intercept or 'another use'.

Cheers,

-Andrew

Rendition machine perhaps?

Might have been a charter with a VIP on board.

Must have been the terrorists who didn't file their electronic flight manifest with CBP.

Was probably an escorted VIP flight into Andrews. Intercepted airplanes are taken to airports outside of the FRZ.

Might also have been one of those target planes the contractors fly to provide intercept training for fighters. I don't think they'd escort any ADIZ violators to Andrews -- too sensitive/high-value an installation.

That would be my guess.

Actually, one of the "interceptors" they use out of Andrews is the Citation. It was dispatched to intercept me on a misunderstanding with Potomac on a Young Eagles flight a couple of years ago out of FME.

That'd be my guess, too. I tried getting a job with L3 Communications, a company based around here, that flies Lears for that exact mission. I can't imagine they'd marshal an intercepted plane that close to anything as important as DC/ADW.
