I have the side panels and seats out of my C172. What kind of insulation can I put in behind the upholstered panels? Can you use any type of glue to hold in place? I know you can't risk corrosion from the glue or possible holding moisture... Anyone know a good material for this? Maybe that gives a little soundproofing too as a plus??
I would appreciate the coaching.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. Aircraft Spruce has a variety of products at difference price points. I've had good results with Soundex and Soundcoat products but they're on the higher cost side. As to installing I found it best to follow the vendors recommendations. And just to throw out there, engine mounts and prop vibration levels also can influence noise in the cabin that soundproofing cannot lower.

any good "over the counter" insulation that can be used instead of the stuff from Spruce? Seems really expensive

Technically you need some sort of flame resistant material. Personally I only use Part 25 flame materials regardless if the aircraft is CAR3 or Part 23. If going outside of those recommendations you may want to discuss your options with your APIA as he may have input on your selections so he can sign off the next annual. That said, using cheaper soundproofing/insulation tends to not give you the results you are looking for considering the work you are doing to install.

gotcha. It had some of that black, smooth stuff, about 3/4" thick, but really just loose in there, and I wanted to get it a little tighter - mostly to keep it a little more air tight ... I've pretty well given up the sound abatement except for installing new firewall sound proofing material. I appreciate the knowledgable reply.
