Pizza is a beautiful thing that most Americans love and a few take way too seriously. The next time someone tries to tell you deep dish isn’t pizza, ask them to define pizza. They will not be able to come up with a definition that doesn’t exclude another universally accepted style. The reality is that the argument against deep dish is not one based in history or reason. It comes from bluster, ignorance, or a desire to be contrarian. Take pity on those people. And if you’re feeling generous, take them out for some deep dish pizza. There’s a pretty good chance they’ve never tried it.

All kidding aside, the article is also very interesting and well researched into the history of pizza and a discussion of styles.

I'm 62 years old and I have loved pizza since I was 2 or 3. I have loved deep dish, thin crust, hand tossed, smothered, covered and white pizza.
The only pizza in my life I couldn't eat was that tofu pizza I had in Gainesville Fl. (I thought it was sausage when I ordered it). Other than that, surprisingly, I never really liked any of the pizza I had in Italy. It was edible, but it reminded me of what Frenchie said on Hogan's Heroes. Italian Pizza is like a saltine cracker with ketchup. And that Pepperoni pizza I ordered in italy; it turned out to be peperoncini instead. I like them WITH peperoni but not instead of peperoni.

Okay, there goes my productivity for the day. I'm starved.

Forgot to bring my lunch to the office.
Going to look for a pizza joint in 10 minutes.

Thanks.

Yeah. That turkey wrap I brought isn't sounding near as good anymore.

There is a joint in Chicago called My Pi
It used to be in Tulsa Oklahoma as well but that one closed.

As a kid that place was freakin awesome. I am looking for an excuse to go to Chicago and try it again.

Anyone been?

They recently opened a My Pi in Daytona Beach. I haven't tried it. YET!

I love Chicago style, and enjoy the stuffed, but prefer the thin.

My #1 pizza joint is Giordano's in Chicago. But it's been years since I was last in Chicago.

My #2 pizza join is Zachary's here in the Bay Area, with three locations. They make a damn good Chicago style pizza, both stuffed and thin. The closest location is about 45 minutes away from me, and I usually drive up there every weekend. I get a pie and get back in time to open a bottle of wine and watch Game of Thrones on Sunday nights.

My #3 place is close enough to where I work I can go there for lunch. Giovanni's in Sunnyvale. They make a NY style pizza, but not that gross too-thin greasy crap on a paper plate like I had in NY once and hated. It's a "real" pizza, and quite tasty.

Now I'm hungry...might have to go to Giovanni's for lunch today.

I can't really eat pizza because I'm gluten intolerant. At least the crust anyway, not much of it. My solution though, is to go with a pizza salad. I just go the the pizza buffet place, put some salad greens on a plate (spinach works well) and get three or four slices of combo or pepperoni and scrape the toppings on to the salad. Perfect solution.

Good article.

I find it funny that some New Yorkers can't fathom the fact that some immigrant groups, including Italians, may have settled somewhere other than New York, and brought their recipes with them.

I will say Chicago Pizza, the chain, absolutely horrible pizza. I'll take a DiGornio over one of their concoctions any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

There are a couple of places around here that make pizzas with a gluten free crust, Mellow Mushroom and Your Pie, MM is more of a traditional pizza place, while Your Pie does individual pizzas and cooks them in a brick oven.

Perhaps Chicago's sole redeeming quality, a good deep-dish pizza is heavenly.

Ironically, the best Chicago-style pizza I ever had is from Conan's, in Austin.

 My Pi is closed.

Piquads is great pizza in Morton Grove. MALNATIS and Giordanos are good. Unfortunately can't really eat pizza anymore.
