Impending, possible meat shortages

I went to Sam's yesterday. There were only a few packages of each cut, but as others have said, they had hundreds of cuts I haven't seen before.
They did have boneless skinless chicken breasts, which is what my wife asked me to look for, but they were in 10# packages. I debated it, but we didn't need or want 10#s of it.

Clearly airlines made the thing “global” while people pretended it was cruise ships. LOL.

Wonder when that lawsuit starts.

Bet ya see every country provide them all legal immunity soon.

The smart ones will toss the cruise ships into the bill, too... quietly... since public opinion is against them, whereas not against the actual transmission spread source.

Airplanes moved the thing.
 
Went to Costco. No beef, plenty of poultry, pork and fish.

The brisket flat was done around an hour+ ago, the point (for burnt ends) will be ready soon. The two pork butts still have hours left. I started the clock at 5:30a and right now it’s 3p.
 
I did ribs, chicken and pulled pork for Mother’s Day. My wife said “not my favorite meal.” I responded with “I know, but I can’t afford to make crab legs for 14 so you’re getting MY favorite meal!”

We did a crawdad boil a few years ago ... she played along but it didn't live up the Alaskan King crab standards. :)

I was at Costco yesterday morning. No beef, no pork, no lamb. They did have family packs of chicken breasts, I got one. We should be good for chicken for a couple of weeks.

I got there right at store opening, there was no line to get in. Not too far from the entrance, there were two pallets of TP, with a sign saying "Limit One". We were down to a dozen rolls, so I got one. The pallets were emptied within 15 minutes. It's a 30 pack so that should cover us until the end of June, having three females in the house. They had no other paper products. I'd been to the grocery store and Target the previous week, no TP at either.

Later in the day, I went over to Publix to get the rest of the week's groceries. They had pretty much everything other than paper goods. I've got to be home all day Saturday to monitor a server move, if Publix still has butts at the end of the week I'll make one.
 
I'm glad they are only testing sick people, really, a false positive = unemployed for two weeks or more.
 
Went to the grocery store today all chicken except for whole frozen and a few quarter legs were sold out. Plenty of ground beef, steak, sausage, ground turkey, etc. I went about an hour before the store closed and it was the perfect time. There were maybe 10 other shoppers.

we go 30minutes after opening....and always get what we want. I've found SamsClub sells out of items a few hours into the day.
 
It feels weird to post in here for “completeness” that being three or so weeks ahead of most places, we’re really close to normal on everything.

One store is out of butchered steaks. They have primals if you feel like picking up a knife.

Other than that, nothing short. Some specific brands low, but nothing without a substitute.

Feels like “bragging” but hopefully y’all a few weeks behind start to see the supply chains straighten out locally.

We did our online ordering in one store’s app last night and assuming no cancellations and only substituted items, we’ll be stocked up for a couple weeks solid easily come pickup day.

Me being the better cook, I always liked perusing the store for inspiration which is a tad harder on an app, but the nurse and docs say I’m doing this until June at least, so... app it is. Oh well.

I decided it’s time to do more grilling anyway.

Oh one weirdness. Couldn’t find bone in chicken *thighs* anywhere in the usual bags of them. Usually they nearly give those things away. And they’re excellent for grilling and stuffing.

The world being obsessed with chicken breast usually makes thighs an awesome cheap option. Better meat than a wing, some dark some light, super tasty when prepared correctly, easy to debone... usually in bags of four to six... just right for two of us to have plenty of leftovers... :)

Costco today, no chicken, no beef except for ground beef, little pork, no butts, but I did snag a rack of back ribs. Looks like some smoking over the holiday weekend!

I'm on the "no more BBQ" probation. The freezers are pretty full. But, boy howdy, ribs do sound good. A couple slabs next weekend won't hurt anything.

I’m going to try another grocery store. They regularly have chicken breasts for $1.99/lb and wings for 0.99/pound. The last alternative is going to the meat market which they charge an arm and a leg.

One of my roommates ordered some stuff from Omaha steaks. Not ideal but it is an option.

That is just wild that it’s so far out of whack there.

For curiosity how many weeks has it been like that?

Took about two here, and that was over a month ago.

Fargo CostCo meat department was nearly fully stocked a few days ago. Miles of beef and pork everywhere you looked. Tried to get some individually frozen chcken thigh pieces but could only find breasts. Got a 10lb box of frozen breasts for $14ish....

Went to Sams today, finally wasn’t busy. Meat cases weren’t overflowing but there was plenty of everything. Got a 10lb tube of ground beef, some chicken legs, and some steaks.

Might as well buy tofu. The bones and skin are what add flavor to chicken.

And.. regarding the poster who mentioned $0.99 wings.. I hate that guy. Wings are the most expensive cut of chicken here. $3.29/lb usually. I live a few hours away from Buffalo. I remember when they used to pretty much give wings away before the Anchor Bar figured out what to do with them. Grr......

Plenty of meat, poultry, fish, milk, butter, cheese, eggs, and most other things at Price Chopper during Old Farts Hour this morning. Pork was especially abundant and some of it was on sale, but there seemed no shortage of any other protein, either.

The shelves and freezers weren't fully stocked, but they've been stocking them throughout the day recently, presumably to reduce hoarding. I didn't notice any posted limits, though.

The produce section seemed normal. Frozen foods also seemed pretty normal other than that a particular brand of frozen pizza was sold out. Most likely it was a sale item from last week.

I actually went there mainly to get tuna in oil, which Sam's Club tends not to have most of the time; but I walked the aisles anyway, mainly for exercise and to scope out the supply situation. I woke up at 3:00 a.m., so I figured I may as well take advantage of my gray beard.

The next California shortage is going to be 5 gallon pails. They have opened the beaches but you have to on the wet sand, so everyone will by buckets to wet up that evil dry sand. Plenty of bucket fulls available in the Pacific Ocean, so it shouldn't lead to a water shortage. (heehee)
 
Dang. If I knew all I needed to be safe outside was wet dirt, I would have been watering the acreage around the house. LOL.

The steaks were cancelled from the order today. Ha. So I feel mildly less guilty about saying everything was available. :)

We just tossed them in the order as a treat anyway, so no biggie.

Had to spend 3.5 hours making cowboy dirty rice on a Saturday. Was awful. House smelled good all day. :)

The small pack of beef hot dogs got substituted to a monster sized pack. 16 I think. Can’t complain but that’s a lot of hot dogs.

I’ll be listing off things to do with hot dogs like the Shrimp guy in Forrest Gump soon.

Hot dog scampi, hot dog a-la-mode...

Yup...anyone can be a farmer. Just throw a couple seeds in the ground and the stuff just grows. Lol.

LOL I was talking about the “wet sand” thing in CA. If only the wet sand was saving beachgoers, all I need to do is water the property here. Ha. Pump that aquifer dry baby! :)

As far as growing things here, yeah... we have entire Water Courts for that and people have shot each other over water... the metro dries up and blows away in about 100 more years according to the water engineering folk.

It’s a high arid near-desert pumping from three non-replenish-able aquifers. Of course there’s still a bunch of surface water we supposedly have to send downstream, but if it gets bad two generations from now, people will probably just start a war with Kansas and Nebraska instead of draining reservoirs like Bonnie Reservoir.

I used to fish there. If you’re bored you can look up what it looks like today.

Only evidence of anything "missing" was the empty refrigerated case with the sign for boneless chicken breasts; as always, hoarding mentality kicks in - I thought (briefly), "Oh, no, I can't buy a bag of boneless, skinless chicken breasts!" Which I have not purchased in, probably, five years.
