I'm an official member of the Oklahoma State University Flight Team!

Over the past month we've been gathering together potential team members, conducted practices and try outs for our competitions. For those of you that don't know, NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Association) puts on two large competitions for each region of the United States. Regionals and Nationals. We are Region 6 which means we will be competing with schools from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Regionals is next week at KRVS (Riverside Airport in Oklahoma).

Competition is a very exciting time. It gives us an opportunity to show what we're made of and have a ton of fun doing it! The event is seperated into two areas. Ground events such as E6B and Aircraft Recognition is one and Flying Events such as Short field, Power off 180s, message drop, and navigation events. I am in Navigation and Message drop. We had our try outs for landing events today (delayed due to weather) so results are pending whether I am in that or not.

So next week I will have an entire 5 days full of airplanes, flying, friends, and competition to see who's the best! Not to mention full permission for school leave. What could be better?!

I'll keep everyone updated and I'm sure there will be a full report afterwards. Anyone in the area is also welcome to stop by Riverside and watch the fun and share your support.

That's great. Sounds like a lot of fun. We didn't have anything like that where I went to school -- not that I would have qualified anyway. Good luck and go get 'em, Tiger!!!

Awesome, Tristan! Congrats! :)

I was on the CMSU (now UCM) flight team for two or three years. Until I became a CFI. In those days a CFI could not compete. I enjoyed every minute of it. Never won anything but never embarrassed myself either.

Tristan, enjoy it and yourself. They are good times.

That's cool Tristan.

One of Tom's students went to Stillwater after Tom got him through his Private and he competed as well and won the National competition too. He has a nice trophy somewhere for that. For those of you who were at my birthday party, he was there and later flew over in his Cheyenne.

Awesome! Congrats! We've tried to re-assemble a team here at ISU a few times, but it never comes together. We eventually quit paying the annual membership dues to be able to compete.

yea the problem is that unless your flight team is subsidized by the university, its basically impossible financially to compete. especially since we dont have a flight program.

I was on the University of Dubuque's flight team for my first two years and had a blast doing it. We are in region V which includes UND, St. Cloud, and Mankato. The first year we traveled to St. Cloud State in Minnesota and the second year we hosted. The only reason I quit was I couldn't afford to do it anymore, both in time and money.

Since I've left school, I think UND finally saw something other than first place. UND's team was always made up of upperclassmen it seemed, including many CFIs and CFIIs. And since our team had mostly newer private and instrument pilots, it was extremely hard to compete and we'd usually be in last place. But we put in good effort and mostly just enjoyed the camaraderie associated with meeting other pilots.

Have fun with it, Tristan!
