My kid wants to start her instrument rating and seems to do well with computer generated materials like most kids these days.

Do you have training stuff you don't need anymore? Are there recommendations for one video over another? Happy to pay a reasonable cost for fairly current materials for her.

I have some leftover materials from the Army, but that was ~40 years ago, and I don't think she'll do well with the FM-150. ;)

If she wants to do a bit of self-learning and doesn't mind watching YouTube videos to pull one or two tidbits out of it you can* gleam a lot of interesting things for free from the internet.

There are a fair amount of IFR training videos on YouTube. Many of them are segments from various training videos and the rest are (mostly) amateur made. However, you can piece them together into a fairly sensible playlist without too much work.

Some good examples
Air Safety Institute: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq4urPJHPbzOsQsgxYKGd2A
Dick Rochfort: http://www.youtube.com/user/rwrpilottraining
FlyingLikeThePros: http://www.youtube.com/user/FlyingLikeThePros/videos
UND AeroCast: http://www.youtube.com/user/undaerocast/videos
etc.

Other videos are great tools for seeing how other pilots handle situations such as real approaches, holding patterns, etc.

*Now, before Ron steps in, these should be watched AFTER you had some solid base instruction or tutorial or lesson. These could TOTALLY cause more harm than good or cause confusion due to the unorganized presentation. But, if your kid runs out of video lessons or in between flight instruction, then these are what I use to pass free time when doing the dishes or during lunch. For me I found that searching YouTube for videos on random topics led me to some VERY informative videos or gave me a LOT of great questions that I then researched on my own.

I've been watching the pilot edge IFR workshops and i've found them very informative..

Doc, there is a WINGS seminar coming up over at Meacham that she might want to attend: "The Instrument Approach Plate, what does it all mean". Discusses the structure and content of the IAP.

More details here. While the online registration says full, I spoke to Jimmy Wille and he kept the online small and left plenty of space for walk-ins.

Hi Doc. I have (I think) one of the King training videos, but it is on VHS (I think that is the right acronym) tape, not CD. Would that help? I have no need for it and she is welcome to it. It is a few years old, but not as old as your stuff :).

I'll PM you. I think I can make my VHS player work again.

Doc -- I'm remembering vaguely that Texas has an aviation loaner library. And they had several copies of the popular videos and books to loan out for free or a small fee...
