I bought my Yaesu portable after a failed avionics master switch took out my whole avionics stack in IMC and I had to come into Ottawa Terminal airspace NORDO (and navigating using Garmin Pilot on my phone).
I haven't had another lost comms emergency since, but I'm glad to have it onboard. I often turn it on when I'm getting the plane ready, to get a feel for the traffic before I start up. It's also good to know I have a radio that would work on the ground after a forced landing outside cell tower coverage. No regrets about the purchase.
