I WON!!!

Wait, can you use the Private Pilot course that came with the first prize to pursue your instrument rating? :dunno:

If not, I'll give you $5k for it. That's a lot of 100LL...

I'm only a Sport Pilot, and I already have an offer to buy the PPL scholarship. I'll keep you in mind if that doesn't work out.

I own a '76 M although the FAA lists it as a '75 M. (76 was first year for circuit breakers vs. fuses of earlier models.) If you have any questions drop me a line. The 150 is a great introduction to ownership.

Cool. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions.

I'm very sorry for your loss, Josh. It must be heartbreaking to forfeit that great prize package but rules are rules, and you broke 'em.... specifically Part 2 Paragraph 1 which states:

NO PICS, DIDN'T HAPPEN!!!!!

As soon as it comes from St. Louis.

Congrats!! Welcome to the world of airplane ownership! :D Now at parties you can make off hand remarks about your hangar or spending all day Saturday washing my plane. :D

All my friends and family keep calling me. They all ask me one question. "Who the f--- wins an airplane?!?" We keep it classy in my circle of friends.

Congrats. Keep the scholarship, go for the real thing. Remember that the IRS will want about 1/3rd of the value in tax as will the state. Start figuring how to pay for it. Or what many do is sell the plane, pay the tax they owe, and get what they want.
Nice plane. And speaking as three of the 2999 ticket holders....
Yeah, congrats. No sour grapes here. I'll try for the next one.
I did win the EAA B17 this year. My club gave it away. I've been trying for 10 years and have probably bought enough raffle tickets that buying it outright would have been cheaper.

I was thinking of selling the scholarship to help off-set the taxes. I don't need much more instruction to test for the PPL, so if it works in my favor, I would rather sell the scholarship. And a buddy of mine who has been thinking of buying a plane himself is offering to go into a partnership with me. Selling it is an option....But even after paying the tax, it's still pretty cheap for an airplane. Since I still don't know what the times are on the engine/airframe, that might be my biggest factor.

Who cares what the time on the aircraft is. They wouldn't have offered it if there was a risk. Plus, even if the aircraft was TBO, there is life in the engine. My mechanic said as long as it's turning good numbers, and you're not leasing it, flying charter, or instructing, fly the hell out of it. The engine will go for another thousand hours or more.
Look at your car. I have 3400 hours on my engine (the miracles of modern computer systems). It's running just fine. I expect to more than double that before I do an overhaul. And why not? Modern engines will last if you take care of them.
By the way, if I could, I'd buy it. refi my house and use the equity to buy you out. A high wing would be a nice coastal tour machine.

The time on the engine will affect the market value upon which he is taxed.

I was planning on making the I WON POST. I'll do it next year. Congratulations!

Congrats to the winner. I owned a 1975 C-150M; nice plane. On subject of "winners," there's a little convenience store back in Rockland, Maine I used to visit under its previous ownership. Last week a local fellow up there totaled his car. He had been buying scratch tickets over some time at the store. He splurged for a $20.00 scratch ticket last week. $500,000.00 was HIS winning ticket. I think I read there were only two such tickets in the whole scratch ticket program.

If anyone were to see this plane somewhere in the south, it used to be mine.

I don't think a sport pilot can fly that C-150M, maybe use that scholarship dollars to upgrade your certificate!

I will have to get my PPL, but it wouldn't take that long. It seems like a waste of a full scholarship for me to use it.

I always figured if I won the AOPA sweepstake plane I'd sell a share to pay the tax.

Wouldn't you also need to pay taxes on the income from selling the share? Make sur the share is large enough to cover both.

Someone please stop them from putting an iPad in the panel of that Deb... PLEASE!!! I'd sell a share to patch up the iPad hole they're going to put in that panel....

Excellent, the 150M is the best of breed in the 150/152s IMO. Now you have to get your CFI so you can make it pay for its taxes. :D

That would be a great idea and my plans for after retirement, but being on call 24/7 the government doesn't allow me to have outside employment. I have a friend that will help with taxes for flying time, so we'll work something out.

I've been smiling all day. I must have looked like a crazy goof at the gym smiling while on the treadmill.

Congrats!

Instead of playing the lottery I just order stuff from sporty's. This year I could win a carbon cub!

No idea yet! That's one of the many question I have to figure out in the very near future. Do you know of any place? I went out to my school in Hartford to talk to the guys there, but one was out with a student and the others were up at Oshkosh. I'm going to start calling around on Monday to see what options there are.

Hey Josh,

Congrats on the win! I didn't realize there was another Milwaukeean here! (I'm in Germantown.) We should meet up sometime...

I've had a hangar at Timmerman since August, and briefly at West Bend before that. I don't think Hartford has any rental hangars, tho that was through-the-grapevine information.

West Bend was about $180, but the hangar was really ratty - The door was coming apart, there was more bird poop than pavement visible on the floor, and they'd hung tarps from the ceiling to try to catch some of the bird poop before it hit the plane. The birds apparently were able to get in and have free run of the place!

Capitol only had an overhang-type hangar available, none enclosed. In this state, that's a deal-breaker for me!

Didn't even check with Waukesha, due to Atlantic being the only FBO - Fee$ galore, ridiculous gas prices, and they don't run flight schools at any of their locations. Not going to support a business that's bad for GA.

Too bad about Racine - That's a good field, with reasonable fuel prices and decent people. It's kind of a pain to get to on the ground, though, nowhere near any freeways.

Timmerman had several options from about $180 on up - Their $180's were nicer than West Bend. I ended up springing for one of the newest hangars, $275/mo but it has a nice electric bifold door and is well-sealed - If any birds were to get in there, I'd have to let 'em in! The guy you want to talk to here is Dave Pichler (pitch-ler), he's very friendly, is the head of the line department and like many people here has been here approximately forever. Fuel prices are on the high side, so I tend to stop at Burlington fairly frequently to fuel up.

BTW, East Troy is another option that's probably not too bad of a drive for you, and they have reasonable fuel prices.

Good luck, and should you stop by Timmerman to check it out, let me know and we'll meet up for lunch or something. :)

Count me in, guys. If you don't mind a lowly renter to tag along with you high-minded airplane owners. :wink2: My office is 7 miles south of Timmerman. I have two clients that have hangars at Timmerman, and are very happy there.

Congratulations on the win. Pretty good odds. I just might buy a ticket(or 100) next time.

Back off buddy................. That Cub is MINE...:D

I think I am going to have to place a few orders with Sporty's now. Competition is a good thing, just remember that when I win! :D

I live in Bayview. I was just out at Timmerman. They offered me a pretty decent deal for a hangar. And I was also out at my flight school at Hartfod this morning. They said they would be able to help me. I have options. I think meeting up would be a great idea for all us locals.

Many congratulations. Winning a 150 is utterly wonderful, though not quite so wonderful as winning a Piper Cherokee :wink2:. Bringing in a partner is a very good idea, unless you have gobs of free time and enough money to spend it flying. Never let anyone say anything bad about your 150. Mine went to Georgia and Oshkosh, and I would still be flying it had I not won the Cherokee.

Taxes really shouldn't be that bad, airplanes in general aren't worth that much these days, and 150's were never worth that much to begin with. Selling the instruction isn't a bad idea at all, if you're already a SP then you won't need it, and the instruction to work toward the PP will be the least expensive part of your training. Remember, you never again have to rent an aircraft.

I also get a new Lightspeed Zulu headset in the deal. I might be willing to sell that and buy 2 cheaper models of headsets and have a few bucks left over for fuel. Right now I don't see a need for all the functions that come with the Zulu. Anybody have experience with them?

What Ben Said!

As for Kent ( Flying Cheesehead) You absolutely must meet up with him. He is a great guy and a POA Veteran. Connecting with local POAers makes flying even more fun.

100 :dunno::dunno::dunno:

with tickets @ 50 bucks each you could just buy your own 150.;)

Okay, maybe not 100, but if you happen to know where I can find a fully restored 150 for $5000, let me know.
