After taking IFR ground school in the early 90's, now going through the Sporty's IFR online course, I think I'm getting close to taking the written again. My last 2 practice tests were 86% and 93%.

I took over 20 practice tests. got 88% twice, otherwise everything else was over 90%. I though for sure I was ready. Still got in the low 80's for the actual test. I was p!ssed off. Still am lol.

I did the Sporty’s instrument rating course on my iPad. I was happy with it. I would choose it again. I wish they had one for commercial.

I knew I was ready for the instrument rating written test when I got tired of taking practice tests and just wanted it over with. Don’t worry about getting a few wrong. You only need a D grade to pass, and your CFII signs off later that you got lessons to fill in the gaps. I didn’t notice my DPE grilling me on any of my wrong answers from the written, so I think that it really has a minimal effect on your life unless you flunk it and need a CFII signature to try the written again.

In other words, go take it and then go flying!

Don't feel bad E, I did the self study kings and even took a 2 day ground school and still only got an 81 or something like that. I look at it as 60% of the test material is useless anyway so you still came out ahead. lol

I took all my writtens (with the exception of AGI) back when the EXACT questions and answers were published. Back then there was no excuse for anything below about 95%. Things have changed however...

How do you like Sporty's Course? Im looking at getting that for my instrument ground school.

I just took my IR Written yesterday and scored an 88%. I used Sporty's course as well as the $20 Gleim book. I REALLY liked the Sportys course, the graphics were good and it explained topics at just the right level. My ONLY complaint was that I didn't feel it prepared me well for the written questions on holds and I had to go to youtube for that, otherwise it was great.

To the OP @lancie00 I did the Sportys and got 91-95%'s pretty consistently and got an 88% on the real test. I found the FAA test to be a bit harder but I think it's be safe to assume you'll pass if you're getting above 90 on the practices.

I'm using it (slowly). I like it. Information is presented clearly without a lot of fluff. I'm about halfway through and my few email questions to their CFIs have been answered quickly.

I chose it because it seemed like the best fit for the demands on my time. It's available both web-based and app-based, and they sync progress through your account. I can study on the web during my down time at work, or I can study on the app on my ipad. The app allows you to download content for offline viewing as well. Other options were either online or desktop application-based.

I'm happy with Sporty's. I guess I'm really glad that I had the ground school first but Sporty's is really well put together and has great graphics. Just don't think this is the only thing you need to learn for IFR. It will get you to pass the test but plan on learning from outside the course too.

The reason I went with them is because their course is good for a lifetime. If I ever have any trouble with anything I can always go back and review that section. I'm assuming that would be true with the next new technology as well. For example, if/when they ever come out with a legal approach procedure for an iPad, I'm hoping that this course will teach it and I will be able to access it in the future.

This is another reason I chose Sporty's and it really does work well across all platforms. I use it on my PC, iPhone, and iPad.

If you haven't already, go look up a video or two on "super cooled water". Maybe also one on the difference between clear, mixed and rime ice.
