Thank you Steve for flying down to visit us in New Orleans. Glad to have gotten the chance to meet you and to see the IAR!

I forgot to ask. What's up with the Daffy Duck nose art?

Here's a pic of Steve's cool plane on the ramp at MSY.

Nice plane! There's and IAR based at KFTG (Front Range Airport) that I get to se occasionally. Very cool!

It was a pleasure to meet you, too. Next time we'll have to do lunch or swap plane rides. I thought it amusing that I ended up parking next to your plane. Sure saved on the walk to track you down.

Well, the previous owner of the IAR applied the illustration when he painted the plane. It's an adaptation of nose art used by a unit of Forward Air Controllers in Vietnam. For Close Air Support operations, the military has "Lame Duck" procedures for aircraft that were battle damaged, lost comms, etc. I suspect more than one FAC felt the need to express that aspect of their job...

Not sure the connection myself. It's rather ironic, because a close friend of mine in FL is ex-AF Special Ops and he hangs around a gang of retired SOPs types that call themselves "The Black Ducks". He even has a pilot lounge on his strip called "The Drunken Duck". So I have special permission to land there due to the insignia... :)

Steve,

Were IAR's used in Vietnam by the U.S. or any other countries?

Interesting. There's a FAC board I was on for a short while; just couldn't spend time on another board. I'd be happy to post something on there if you'd like. I never saw one of these in RNV; doesn't mean they weren't there sometime. Let us know; that war was so long, who knows!

My hat's off to the guys that flew FAC. Flew low and slow to support us on the ground.

Best,

Dave

As far as I know the IAR-823 was never used in combat. The production run was from 1974 to 1984 and they were only used as primary/basic trainers and liason aircraft by the RoAF. A few are now in private hands in Europe, or in museums, most, if not all, of the rest are in the USA. more info at www.iar823.com

I think the previous owner just liked Daffy Duck and had seen the artwork on an L-19 at an airshow while he was prepping the plane for new paint. I've seen a picture of an L-19 with the exact artwork on a Vietnam vet webpage at some point, but I haven't been able to locate it again. If I do I'll post the link.

Steve,

Just realized it was YOUR plane I saw on the flightline at Hondo in May 2006. Attached are the three photos I took of your great bird. How'd it do in the judging?

Did you get to stay for Mike Melville's presentation? That was AWESOME. I got my AOPA hat signed by him afterwards...

Hey, great!

I think I came in 3rd out of three...but the duck made the banquet slide show, lol.

I really enjoyed Melville's presentation. And the fact he flew from CA in his canard for the fly-in. I liked his comment about all the indications going offline except for the Dynon on the 1st ride up. I spoke to him briefly the day he arrived, but was out working the vol check-in tent most of the time.
