I have given up looking for a new, to me truck, for now

I have a 2019 Colorado diesel long bed. Very happy with it. The new ones are nice, and I've read good things about the 2.7L turbo 4 their using, but they really messed up by not offering a long bed version. It is "the right size", though you'd need a pretty long garage to comfortably fit it. It's basically the same size as a mid-90's F-150.

The last two vehicles I purchased were purchased out of state and got to the bottom line via email. Once agreed I placed a small deposit and went and got them. Local place couldn't touch the price so I felt good. Did I still get screwed...sure, but I was happy with the purchase.

And yeah I bought a sports car...not practical, and a 2500 ram. Did I need it...nope but it's what I wanted. I mean half of us own planes...cause you know, we need it....and will spend a fortune on said planes that fly maybe 100 hours..some more some less I get it. But then balk at the price of vehicles that we drive daily. Idk if I want it, practical or not, and I have the money, I'm getting it. Life is too short.

I may or may not have had this poster in a college house.

I can't believe you are splitting hairs about "need".

I don't NEED a Bonanza. I don't my house to be on an acre of land on the side of the Intra Coastal waterway. I don't NEED to eat steak when beans and rice provide sufficient protein.

My neighbor and I used the same house keeper. She came every two weeks. My wife decided she would like her to come every week since we both worked full time. The neighbor said to us: "Do you really need a housekeeper every week?". I responded to her, "Do you really NEED that 35 ft sailboat you just bought?"

I NEED transportation. A midsized truck fits my needs more than a sedan or a big truck, and especially more than a car and a trailer. That is an absurd idea for me.

I can't believe you actually think you know what other people NEED.
Relax bro. My stating my opinion about a totally meaningless topic shouldn’t offend you so.

Frontier was updated in 2022. The new ones look pretty nice.

Agreed. I'd have no problem with a Frontier. It probably won't lead in any category, but it's a solid truck overall. Driven several as rentals.
Seems to have taken on a Tacoma-like appearance. I can’t comment on the new ones, but the ones produced in the last 5-7yrs that I’ve driven or ridden in haven’t impressed me. They have a pretty hard ride and don’t handle as well as I’d expect from a truck of that caliber. Just my 2c, I just haven’t been a big fan of Nissan products, especially since Renault has driven the brand into the ground from a QC standpoint.

This Caliphate TV intermission brought to you by The Taliban.... The Taliban, official sponsor of the Toyota Tacoma. Now available in sandy ash from the factory.

If you were working behind a litening/sniper pod circa 2015, everything moving in that monochrome screen was a blasted Tacoma, or a donkey.:D

That's kind of my thought for SUV's too. There are too many FWD SUV's pretending to be useful. If you need an SUV, get an SUV.
I don't know. I like my mini fwd suv. 44 mpg and I can get a lot more in it than in the truck. I can slide in 10' lumber and close the door. In my 10mpg truck, I would have to tie it down sticking out the back. This picture is 14' long porch columns for the house. It was a 300 mile trip to get them, so saved a lot of gas $. I couldn't even legally haul them in the truck because they would have stuck out the back 8 feet. upload_2023-2-23_11-12-12.jpeg

Yeah, I measured and can fit up to 94" long lumber boards in my VW hatchback if I put the passenger seat down, and fit them diagonally from corner to corner. That's better than my father-in-law's pickup can do!

I don't think the Nissan trucks/Pathfinder/Xterra/ ever suffered from many QC issues to my recollection. Most of the QC stuff centered around that crap CVT Nissan used. If it was a RWD-based body-on-frame vehicle, it was fine. They certainly didn't have a "modern" interior or luxury of any sort, but then, neither does a Tacoma.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Titan, 2020-2022 Frontier, and 2023 Z vehicles. The transmission parking pawl may not engage when the vehicle is shifted into park, which can result in a vehicle rollaway.

They’ve all had bouts of issues, but it seems they’ve cheapened out the latter model vehicles with plastic everything. Many of their problems have been transmission and powertrain related, but they’ve also had their share of electrical gremlins too. I agree that the interiors could use some work from both parties, but the Tacoma is night and day when compared to a Frontier, but that’s just my opinion.

I could not bring myself to purchase a vehicle (Tacoma) that comes equipped with drum brakes in 2023. Drum brakes were getting old 45 years ago, it's inexcusable for a modern car manufacturer to supply anything, let alone a truck with drum brakes.

They just wanted to remind people what cars were like in the 60s.

I agree, no argument there! I mainly speak from a handling and overall quality perspective.

Makes you just want to roll up the manual windows and scream over the factory-installed 8-track!

Reminds me of picking up building supplies in my wife's VW cabrio. Put the top down and that backseat holds a lot, vertically and strapped to the back of the front seats (for safety, lol) Then I remember driving her Prius out to Highland lakes off Highway 4, the road description is "Take Note: Highland Lakes Road is a narrow, steep and winding dirt route where safe travel speeds average 20 mph or less. High clearance vehicles are recommended". And the places I could go with my 5 speed Sentra with chains (not cables) in snow, back when a cars wheel wells weren't so tight. That sentra got me through some interesting dirt roads in Gooseberry mesa too, just turn the radio up so you don't hear the scraping underneath.

Full disclosure, I did rip the oil pan and a few other things off my civic once. But that was after doing an impromptu 360 at 60+ mph in Pennsylvania on my way to Mass. Couldn't "power out" of that one, LOL. Still can't believe i didn't roll it after shooting off the interstate.

Whomever posted about hatchbacks over sedans, spot on! Just make sure the rear seat is fold flat which seems to be the norm now. My lumber needs are easily handled on the subie's roof rack, actually can't believe i haven't broke that rack yet. I do have to borrow a truck for the rare stone, mulch, dump run but, that gives me a reason to pick up a bar tab for my buddy as a thank you, WIN - WIN!

I don't think cherry-picking something as mundane as a parking pawl is going to be a major quality concern, lol. If they were shelling transmissions left and right, or having powertrain failures (Ford triton cam pahsers, GM LS AFM lifter failures, Mopar ABS/electrical) I'd think it would be of concern. I wouldn't think twice about buying a Nissan truck in regard to quality. I don't love the cheap feeling of their interiors, but it's not like the fabric is wearing through or the plastic is breaking off in your hand. I wouldn't want an Altima or Sentra/Murano though, as the CVT has such a poor reputation for making it even 100K.

cherry picking? mundane? ok lol.....they recalled almost 100% of the brand new frontier line due to parking brakes literally releasing. I went to the nissan dealer where they had a dozen refreshed frontiers on the lot and the guy said I can't sell you one of them, they all have to go back. but you're right, at least the fabric isn't wearing. not sure I've seen that in like 20 years though.

also, my altima has 105k miles on the cvt transmission with nothing more than oil changes.

So what qould you rather have, a recall that takes a day to fix and costs nothing, or a Ford that you end up replacing the engine because the plastic timing guides failed? Or the GM which drops a lifter and needs to have the top end opened up? The above mentioned issues aren't part of any recalls on the Fords, GMs that are going to get covered by the manufacturer, but they are big issues and well known. I'm only saying that picking out a single recall isn't really going to prove that quality is a concern. Every manufacturer has recalls on most of their vehicles, whether it be something as pointless as a backup camera that might be finicky, to complete steering failure while driving down the road.

I’d be getting the transmission flushed if you haven’t.

I just think some manufacturers are more prone to extensive recalls than others and it’s only going to get worse with the increased technology and plastic parts, but seriously, what’s with every new truck taking on this cyborg look? I mean, I just saw a preview of the next generation Tacoma and geez, I really dislike the ‘updated’ body style. Maybe this calls for a new thread…

Yup, the designs are mostly influenced by highway safety standards and fuel efficiency, which is indicative of "design convergence" because there are only so many ways to design a car that meets criteria for headlight height/spacing, auto/pedestrian impact criteria, high crash-test ratings, aerodynamics, etc. In the end, most all autos will gravitate towards a fairly standard profile with only minor details being unique. Toyota also tends to lag behind the rest of the market in making design changes, so they have seen what has been popular with Ford/GM/Ram and started implementing those same ideas. Nissan was particularly bad at bastardizing features from all of the Big 3 on their Titan lineup and ended up with a hodgepodge of design cues that don't mesh well.
