Human head transplant. No - no, not the Onion

Not gonna happen until folks figure out how to repair the spinal cord...so this is just some doc selling smoke-n-mirrors based on thirty year old work that was an abject failure.

He really was on coast to coast a few weeks ago.

Yup, the doc is out there (way out there) pitching the story, trying to get funded. It's just a fancy scam.

I can't stop thinking Young Frankenstein: Inga "He vould haf an enormous schwansctuker". Froderick: "That goes without saying." Inga "He vill be very popular."

Wow, interesting. I wonder if he is using stem cells to heal the spinal chord? Then there is how is he going to keep the brain oxygenated? I'm guessing it's going to be done in a hypothermic state. This is a big deal to pull off. I don't think the guy's sanity/psyche is at an more stake than anyone else who wakes up a vegetable or as a quadrapalegic, and or drug burned. I don't think there will be any consciousness clash issues, unless of course my ex wife was correct and my penis has it's own mind, there might be that relationship to deal with.

1. I dont think this will ever happen BUT if it does, let's jump to the next illogical conclusion and ask

so what happens when someone gets their 58 year old head transplanted on a 22 year old body?

What happens when a male head gets transplanted on a female body?
What will the brain do?

go bonkers 'cause the hormones are all wrong....this is such a scam

OK, how 'bout the real question - Can my AME issue my third-class in-office with my new head, or will I need to call Dr. Bruce?

Put me squarely in the camp with those who believe that Dr. Bruce is the only human on the face of the earth who is qualified to deal with a situation such as this.

Yeah, but they put some really wacky stuff on C. to C.

I posted something about this a few months ago for Tony, but he didn't think it would be perfected in time for him.

Well, that has been kinda figured out using stem cells, there have been positive tests of regrowing sections of spinal chord in mice that they cut. That happened a couple of years ago. Stem cell research has continued, it's just very low volume and very quite due to political issues.

Sure, all those folks with recent spinal cord injuries are all staying quiet...

This Doc is saying he can transplant a head in two years...it's a scam.

Nobody affected is staying completely quiet. We can't legally use the technology really there are so many limitations, there are small human trial programs, but with the restrictions on the practice, it's all 2 decades behind in development, and is kept as low key as possible to keep the abortion clinic protest crowd away from their doorstep. There are plenty of people petitioning congress to let go.

It's not really a head transplant, but a body transplant, eh?

It's sort of like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where they offer to replace one of the character's brains with an electronic one:

It will be programmed to drink tea and say "What?" Nobody would notice.
I would notice.
No you wouldn't, you'd be programmed not to.

 Which book was that in?

You have a 22 Y/O with a Corvette, a 24 Y/O girlfriend and a pocket full of Viagra.

Fat chicks are already putting down deposits. And you folks thought it would be about saving old people...

If they do this, the guy who has volunteered is going to suffer greatly I'm betting.

I have a friend that was in a bad car wreck and his right arm was torn completely off. The accident happened just a mile or two from a state of the art hospital. They were able to put his arm back on and he now has something like 80% + use of his arm and hand. Seems like a miracle.

The big down side is he now lives in chronic, constant pain in the arm. They can do anything about it, it's just nerve damage that may, or may not get better in time. In his case, dependence on pain killers is not moral weakness, but a requirement to get through the day. The drugs are now killing him. He has confessed that sometimes he wishes they hadn't put it back on. :(

I don't think he'll survive the operation, the technical challenges are far more immense than any transplant that's ever been done. I can't imagine he's not going to run into something unaccounted for just in general medical process besides these psychic issues (I don't think that will be the barrier).

Head, hardly used. Off of a middle age guy. No college, moderate drinker, non-smoker. Not much hair left, but green eyes and strong jawline. Needs glasses, and teeth aren't very straight, couple fillings. Should be good for another 20-30 years. Asking $450 OBO

No lowballers, scammers. Texts ignored.

Stem cell research has continued, it's just very low volume and very quite due to political issues.

The political firestorm created by human origin stem cell research has blown over. Even while research on stem cells using federal money was forbidden (thanks, George W.), the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, MA developed a method to take some skin cells from the tail of a lab rat, reverse engineer those cells to pleuripotent stem cells, and then forward engineer those cells to any kind of rat cell desired for the research. Soon this research migrated to animals other than rats, so research was no longer held hostage by needing human stem cells. Head researcher on this project: Dr. Rudolph Jaenisch.

I think you have the main issue spotted, nerve pain. Nerve pain is intense and persistent. He needs to get on clean heroin/morphine, the natural stuff from poppies. It's all the other crap in the pain killers that burns out your kidneys and liver. Physiologically, opiates are really low in damage. The problem that junkies usually run into is disease, infection, and malnutrition. Junkies with money you never suspect. I hate that they want to give Vicodin and othe acetaminophen cut opiates.

If I woke up from a head transplant with nerve pain, I would be doing low level aerobatics a lot.

I think most of the time this does not happen though...?

Didn't someone keep the head of a monkey alive (brain intact, eyes moved and reacted to sound) or is that the faint memories of some old movie that is partially obscured from my memory by alcohol..??

I have a vague recollection of that on some 'strange but true' type of show I think, or maybe one of those Stephen King compilations... It would definitely be strange and interesting if actually true.

The current scam artist is referencing the abjectly failed monkey work. None of the monkeys lived very long...

Why do you think he's a scam artist? :dunno: I don't know anything about him. How long did the heads last? Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days?:dunno:

Found it, 9 days, quadrapalegic, immune response rejection.

Well, what has the Russian advanced?:dunno:

Why do I think he's a scam artist? Because there is no hope of success on his timeline. It's as simple as that.

Success is guaranteed as learning something will be assured. Survival is almost gauranteed to not be viable, but what can be learned with just a few waking minutes is potentially invaluable. Knowledge is the most valuable thing in the universe.

Success does not equal learning, success is delivering the product you promised.

The doc is say fund me and I will deliver with absolutely no realistic notion of delivering the product. It is a scam from day one.

What is he promissing to deliver?:dunno: How do you know he hasn't already had secret success in some Gulag? A Russian Mengele...

Or stem cells. The key to nerve repair and transplant acceptance lies with stem cells. Gulags are great places to experiment with them, and think of the biotech fortune. Problem is, he can't publish those results.
