My avionics shop just made this post:

Its the E5 on the left showing the new hotness....the free upgrade to unlock the HSI, as well as the $500 option to unlock the air data.

Their photo gives a good showing side-by-side of the E5 and the G5. The G5 looks sort of....tiny.. compared ;-)

Good to see this. Aspen has needed a bit of a shot in the arm.

To be fair, it looks like the G5 HSI either isn't hooked up to any nav source or no flight plan was entered, and most of the things you can display on a G5 are disabled, whereas everything on the Aspen is turned on.

Also, just looking at that pic, it looks like an Aspen Pro. What's the difference between the two now? An Aspen Pro for $5K is a reasonably good deal, but selling what looks like a Pro as the E5 and still having the Pro in the lineup for twice the dollars doesn't make any sense.

Is this E5 on the Max hardware or the old hardware?

The E5 is the exact same hardware as the new Aspen ProMax units. The only difference is the software, and that the ProMax also ships with ACU2. Other than that, its the same exact hardware, so you get the super bright screen and processor improvements. You can "unlock" all the software features to get it to the same capability as a ProMax unit.

I still like the redundancy of having 2 G5s with separate batteries and the ability to "convert" the G5 HSI to an attitude indicator.

100% agree. I love my dual G5’s and the independent redundancy.
