The past Saturday I flew my 2nd solo to make a few T+Gs at Belen E80. The pattern was rather busy and at times I was not sure if I tracked every aircraft. I would not say it was Oshkosh, but it was a little exciting.

Later I listened to LiveATC recordings for KABQ and a guy in a Bonanza asked to practice instrument approaches at Belen. The controller said that "it is very busy at Belen, they are having a pancake breakfast out there, so why don't you make your approaches here at International." I was on another frequency in the event, so I did not hear it live.

Now the question is, why is it that an approach controller knows about pancake breakfast, but I do not? How do they find out? How does everyone else find out? The sky was dark with airplanes! Is there a secret website or something?

Several ways...

1) Many states have a web site run by their DOT that lists fly-ins in that state. Looks like New Mexico's is here but for some reason doesn't list anything at Belen on Saturday.

2) The bulletin board at the local airport - I see lots of flyers for area fly-ins.

3) There could be a NOTAM issued, but generally there's not unless they close runways/taxiways to use them for parking.

4) Third-party web sites. There are tons of them. Try these:

http://www.funplacestofly.com/
http://www.eaa.org/chapters/activities/flyins.asp
http://www.flyincalendar.com/

Don't forget this one:

http://www.nmpilots.org/

And sometimes, they even let ATC know. And other times, ATC will ask a passing pilot why there's so much traffic going to the same location.

I can usually smell them. :D Just kidding. A lot of people are pretty much aware of all the pancake breakfasts in the area, and when they are. Often times if there is one close by, the other people at the airport are talking about it when I show up at the airport. They might even be talking about it during the week leading up to it. I think that as time goes on, you will become more in the loop so to speak, and you will just hear about them from other pilots. However, I guess that if you have your own plane, you go out to the airport, get in your plane, and go flying, you might not know about it. Personally I think that you should start thinking about flying to a few of them. It is great reason to fly somewhere, and you can turn an hour and a half of flying into a whole morning of fun with airplanes.

I think when a controller notices an unusual amount of traffic transitioning their airspace in a certain direction on a weekend morning, the first thing that pops into their minds is pancakes. Even they know there's this weird thing with pilots and pancakes.

Someone say pancakes?
