How much have you gotten away with?

I live in the constraints of a standard Ziploc quart freezer bag, as they are the most durable for a week of continent hopping. I don't cheat because I just don't have time to deal with TSA bulldung. I aim to get through TSA as quickly as humanly possible. Extra time at TSA = more time away from family = unhappy Andrew.

As an aside...

Like Mr. Suffa, I live out of a 22" rollaboard and a Timbuk2 XL for up to three weeks at a time. (Current record is 3.5 weeks, but that involved some laundry being sent out; but I wouldn't be able to do that on 3.5 weeks of suits) Heck, I can survive for a week in Europe with just my Timbuk2.

This week (5 days in Shanghai) I over-bagged. I could have lived out of a smaller briefcase or just my rollaboard. But, the utility is nice so I carry both bags.

Cheers.

OK I am back. Piece of cake. Changed it up on my way back (only non-makeup liquids in the bag, bag stayed in my carry-on (didn't take it out), and makeup liquids in my purse (mascara, foundation). No issues. The guy on the way back said "next time" I can't stack the iPad and the laptop - they need separate bins. But he didn't re scan one at a time, it was a warning.

!@#%$#^%

iPad's can stay in your bag. The don't need to be scanned. Maybe this is a PHL thing...

No, it is a "me" thing. I asked the cute SFPD guys at the "information booth" inside SFO what I did and did not need to take out of my luggage. Things like take off my shoes, put my laptop in a bin, etc. Then I asked them if my iPad counted as a laptop. They had no idea so I just treated it as one. Many bins later I was through security. My guess is when they see me do the bin thing they feel I am trying to comply and I get through quicker. Not sure.

iPad's don't need to leave your bag. I think TSA changed the script to "large electronic devices" that the bark while walking up and down the security aisles. Extra bin = extra space on belt = everyone else goes through security slower.

Cheers.

I did not use an extra bin, see my other post. I accidentally stacked it with my laptop in ONE BIN. SFO didn't care, PHL said I couldn't stack them and asked me for two bins but let me go on a warning. They said they can't see through it on the screen and it looks like a brick. Next time I will leave it in my bag.

When I said many bins later it was because I hate bins. Shoes, laptop, carry on luggage, backpack, etc.

Well, on our last trip our 5 yr old son decided to pack a few toys in his carry on while we weren't watching. One such toy was a shiny metallic looking toy handgun. :) It wasn't caught in the scanners since it was plastic.

They can stay in your bag unless they cannot stay in your bag. Why the screeners can make up the rules as they go along.... (just try using your Global Entry or NEXUS card at most TSA stations.... even though it is a permitted ID under their scheme -and is listed as #7 on their internal SOP list. Heck, I had to summon a supervisor when the &*%^ front-line TSA screener tried to refuse a valid US passport at BWI one time....)

PHL has had a series of issues with rogue TSA screeners. It's not quite as bad as EWR (the worst) or IAD/BWI/AUS (close behind EWR), but it's within the 10 worst TSA stations.

Yes, the iPad is supposed to be able to stay in the bag. But in many places they want it out. Likewise the "laptop friendly" bags - in some places, the TSA refuses to accept them.

Sometimes if you do without asking they won't bother you, a la iPad...
