Hey - how expensive is it to replace the headrest on a Cherokee 180? Hypothetically, supposing someone tripped getting out of the plane and put weight on it, snapping it off from the seat back?

Asking for a friend.

Texas Air Salvage has one for $495 (ouch).

why not do an owner repair?

You can bargain with Texas Air Salvage. Sometimes their prices are on the money and sometimes they are reaching. I’ve bought several parts from from.

Is this a whole seat or just a headrest?. If it is just a headrest, don't you just need to find someone with with a tig welder and a bit of skill?

I was surprised those headrests just slide right up and out with ease on a 140.

whatever it is, probably cheaper than adding them (legally) to the short seats...

Color me stupid, but...

Cover come off the headrest easy? Looks like a chunk of aluminum bar stock with a couple holes to bolt to something inside the headrest.
Got an angle grinder? Or a band saw?

But I ain't no A&P.

Remove seat and headrest covers. Fabricate $7 owner designed part. Install. Replace covers.

My point exactly. Owners are permitted to repair and fabricate their own parts. To me this is a minor repair if ever there was one.

My wife put all her weight on one of the armrests in the rear of the Bonanza and it snapped off just like this. My A&P has found the replacement metal piece on eBay and I'm going to have him fix it at the next oil change.

My assessment, too. Once you get the cover off, my guess is it's very fixable. And even if you wreck the cover, you'd still have to re-cover a new one, so there's no additional cost. Try to carefully remove the cover and assess the damage before assuming the entire headrest isn't fixable and has to be replaced.

Well ... FRIEND ... I'd have the oaf that broke it kick in for the repair. May be just me, but I get out first and tell the pax to sit tight. I then go to their side and tell them EXACTLY what they can grab and can't grab as well as where they can step to extricate themselves. I also deploy flaps so they won't step on them.

Note that the aircraft involved is a Cherokee 180.
