Hoverboard Action

I saw two 20-somethings riding those things on the sidewalk Saturday, in the rain.

Best not try to take them on an airline...

The first time I saw one was August, in an LAX terminal. Some guy was driving one of those around a gate area. Our local mall has a store that sells those things.

Those are tame compared to some of the calamities I underwent learning to ride a unicycle.

With my back problems if I were to fall backward like some of those people did I would be in the hospital. Oh what it was like to be young and stupid! :yikes:

Yeah, I recall being young and stupid.

I'm not young anymore.

:D

I spent Christmas in an emergency room with a sick kid...there was us and two guys over fifty both there for injuries on Hoverboards...Orthopedic Surgeons are going to have great first quarters..

Not to mention Personal Injury and Products Liability lawyers, thought that may take longer than a quarter to hit the bottom line.

Probably, in another 10 years (or 10 minutes), we'll look back on these things and wonder "What were they thinking?"

I walked around the mall today and saw the hoverboard store. There were about 10 people in there, but the only one on a board was the sales guy.

I think the problem with them is they don't have the handlebar post like a Segway. That post dampens the deck angle shifting. Without it, the rider has to keep his foot/lower leg angle stiff. If you don't do that, and point your toes down (or up) that hoverboard takes off out from under you.

My 65 yo mom broke her wrist Christmas Day on a hoverboard for my sister. Of all people NOT to try out the hoverboard, my mom should've been one. Ugh.

I saw them on sale in a mall over a holiday weekend. The sales guy was riding one around. I was curious and asked if I could try it out. He said, "unfortunately, no, for liability reasons, we can't let you try it."

I sure as hell ain't going to spend $400 on one if I can't even try it first!

I'm adding that one to my all-time favorites!!! :cheerswine:

Glad you liked it. :)

I've always liked this from Jimmy Buffett.

"I'm growing older but not up
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
So let the winds of change blow over my head
I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead"

Not really the same as being old and still stupid but you probably get my point.

Shouldn't that tell you all anyone needs to know about how (un)safe they are?

The older you get, the better you were.

I think some of my arthritis came from tumbles while riding unicycle. I still have one and get it out occasionally just to see if I can still ride it. I can, but I fall much more easily now, being stiff and not as agile as I was, but I'm thankful I'm not in a wheelchair like so many my age (or younger) I see in the chronic care centers.

Young people are amazed to see a guy in his 60s riding a unicycle. I'm sure it must be far more difficult to learn than a hoverboard. No gyro-stabilization. "When I was your age we actually had to LEARN how to work stuff..."

While I was backing out of the driveway on Christmas day I barely saw this strange blue light on the street right behind me.

Yep. Dumass kid all dressed in black on his new hoverboard.

How do you turn it? Lean left and right?

I think they are hinged in the center so you have differential steering. Push one foot platform down, and the other one up, and it will spin.

The future is now, could be a good thing if they perfect the battery. Being an old timer ,I wouldn't even try it,although I have done a few Segway tours.
