I remember it well...

In the Catholic school I attended at the time, all of us were told to pray, because "God pays special attention to the prayers of children." I'm not so sure about the theology behind that, but it seemed to make sense back then.

The whole country was praying for the astronauts, actually. Churches and temples all had special prayer services. Their situation was constantly being updated on every television channel and radio station, and people walking down the sidewalk stopped and listened to the reports coming from the tinny transistor radios blaring from the shops. Even the broadcasts of baseball games were interrupted for progress updates.

When they touched down safely, there was a spontaneous expression of joy and relief through the whole neighborhood. People cheered, and many cried. The ships tied up at the docks rang their bells and blew their whistles.

One of the TV stations played back the actual video ant the above statement isn't quite what was actually said; although, it's what was said in the movie.

Best,

Dave

Both the crew and Mission Control did a wonderful job. It was Nasa's finest hour.
