Hi, Just joined the forum,
I'm going to be in Hawaii (first time) for a Festival and have an opportunity to do some flying around Oahu. I won't have time to get checked out to fly to other islands. I'm booking a plane for around a two hour flight.

I'm looking for recommendations on what to see and also any idiosyncrasies I should be aware of.

I'm not sure if I am posting in the right area so I might post in one other section -- please forgive the newby:goofy:

Welcome to POA - I think you are in the right place!

Look at Moore Air at HNL
http://www.mooreair.com/

They have a decent fleet including a couple of twins and you can schedule a CFI to fly with you and you can fly yourself on a scenic flight wherever you want to go. I highly recommend them.

HNL is busy, but really not that bad - it is one of the few Class B airports in the country with students flying solo in/out.

Only thing that may shock you is the cost - flying in Hawaii is more expensive than in CONUS no matter how you slice it....but IMHO it is worth it!

There are some folks up at Dillingham that do scenic flights and instruction, but I do not have any contact info for them.

We took a flying vacation in Hawaii about ten years ago. Very long trip report here.

Welcome to the forum, give us a pirep ,on the flight, when you get back,

Everyone goes to the Arizona, but I found that the channel into Pearl along Ford island was a more sobering reminder as the other ships that sank are still there also. If I remember correctly each berth has steel letters with the name of the ship that is down there.

Aloha and welcome!

I fly out of HNL. I recommend both Moore Air and George's if you wanna do an island tour. If you wanna get close to the mountains to see the waterfalls I'd recommend going with one of the tour helicopters (Blue Hawaiian and Makani Kai). Airplanes usually fly along the shoreline or offshore. There's also Island Seaplane Service.

It's about 1.2 hours on the hobbs if you go through the middle of the island. It will be a lil bit more if you go down the Waianae coast. Also, visitors get charged more for fuel surcharges and CFI rates.

Fly around the island of Oahu for the island tour. I prefer clockwise but either will do. Land at Dillingham, thats where the glider ops are. Fly just off the coast gives the best view. Take some pics.

Did this in Nov 2014 with The Right Flight School at HNL. Small operation, but the owners were very nice, and it was an outstanding experience. We had 4 plus instructor, so we went in the Aztec and I logged my first multi time. If you're a history buff, being at the controls of a plane flying over the plantations, Hickam, Schofield and then Pearl Harbor is beyond description.
