And... as a friend pointed out, Doohan was a D-Day veteran, wounded that night in a friendly-fire incident that took off one of his fingers. Afterwards, he took pilot training to fly artillery-spotting aircraft.

I met him once, briefly, by chance outside a convention center full of Trekkies, when I was in my early teens and a huge Trekkie. Got to shake his hand.
I was completely star-struck. We mispronounced his name, and he corrected us, with a big friendly smile:
"It's Doo-'un', as in 'How ya doin'!"
