Attached hangar. Need to secure insurance. Any issues to be aware of? The airplanes are insured already. Is a hangar considered a garage?

I'm a long time State Farm customer, if that matters.

The hangar home wasn't as big of a deal than the high valuation of my house. USAA didn't seem to have any problem with the attached hangar.

Is your hangar attached or an "accessory structure."

Attached. A really generous garage through the kitchen door.

through the kitchen door.
The only issue a friend had was his carrier required a specific type firewall/door between the hangar and house which ended up being double 5/8" sheetrock attached to the common walls and a steel entry door.

They usually want an automatic closer on the door as well.

Read your policy before calling, you may already have coverage for additions, outbuildings, appurtenances. (like mine)

State Farm insured it for the former owner. I have State Farm on the other houses so it sounds like this will be simple enough. The purchase was a cash deal so no bank required insurance. I forgot about needing it til last night. Should have it all taken care of today. I went from semi-panic to all’s good in about a half hour. Details, details. So many details.

In NC, "residential" hangars only need a one hour firewall (similar to garages). If your hangar exceeds 2000' of airplane parking area, then you need a stronger firewall.

Hangar is 3300 sf. Well insulated. Finished drywall. Great lighting. Hydraulic door so tight I need to crack the man door open to relieve the vacuum when the big door opens. Polished concrete floor. My first hangar and I'm excited to get it settled. I need to pull the motor off my Cub so that comes first as soon as I find my tools. The adventure begins.

Interesting. Is the hangar attached??

I recently switched to USAA (from Nationwide) and they really didn't blink an eyelash at it. I described it as a garage on steroids.

It's separate about 10' from the house.
