Hangar Damage

As I drove up to my hangar this morning I noticed a hole in the side of the building. The airport manager insists on allowing people to park glider trailers very close (4-ft) from the rear and side of my hangar even though there are acres and acres of open space elsewhere. One backing up his trailer ran it into the side and made a hole in the metal siding. Cops taking a report estimated the damage at $1,000. Naturally the person who did this just took off and didn't say anything. Nice people. This is at KANK, Salida, CO
 
Have the hangar owners put some pressure on the airport manager.Next time the trailers are on airport look them over for scratches and damage,especially the ones parked further away from your hangar.Unfortunately no takes responsibility for teir actions .
 
I would suspect you could put some serious pressure on the airport authority to reimburse you for repairs, rather than answer for a policy that created the problem for no good reason.
It is worth a try.
 
$1000 seems a little steep for one galvanized ribbed sheet.

Send the bill to the airport, maybe put some concreat blocks next to your hangar too?

Not many hangar owners at KANK, not much leverage.
 
I would politely ask the airport director, since he let them park close enough to your hangar to damage it, to repair it..... If you do not get satisfaction then feed the glider people a slice of their own medicine.... Like,,,,, a few flat tires or a crushed trailer or other " issues"......


Don't get mad.................... get EVEN....

If glider pilots were required to have FAA third class medicals, this never would have happened.

I pay about $3.15 a linear foot for 30 year coated R-Panel. So if the damage is contained on one panel you are probably looking at about 60 dollars. The colors are standard, but I guarantee the new panel(s) will be obvious unless your hangar is new. They just get dirty and fade a little over time.

The best way to handle it is if you have anyone doing construction on the field. They could come over and knock that out in no time.

What are ya worried about..... That the glider guys/gals get away with damaging someone else's property scott free ??:dunno::dunno:..

or that the person with the damaged hangar gets a bit of justice?:dunno:;)

The glider community is VERY small and you can bet that over a few beers the person who did the hit and run, spilled the beans to fellow glider friends.....:yes:
 
How do you know it was a glider pilot?

First task: prove whodunit. So you are going to take retribution on a (probably) innocent person's property?

Based on what the OP said............ I give it a 99.994% chance the trailer parked close to his hangar... HIT IT......

And he said they were glider trailers
....

Maybe..... Most locales make the 1000.00 threshold the difference between felony damage and minor damage.........

I hope they find the one who did it.....

Bet it was a black guy, it is usually a black guy.
 
A contractor is coming in the morning to give me a bid for repairs. Granted that panels may not be grossly expensive but if not available locally (likely not) having some shipped in will be costly, and labor even out here is not cheap.

At my age I am not about to be crawling up ladders to fix this, so I will hire it done and hope to recover from the 'guilty' party although I don't have much hope of that happening.

No. If he did the report as an accident, or as a criminal mischief, either way the report requires a damage estimate.
We make SWAGs of damage all the time, because the box has to be filled. We know they are guesses and mean absolutely nothing. That's especially true in car accidents, where apparently minor damage can be $300 or $3000 depending on if there's hidden damage to the crush assemblies and what the OEM charges for replacement parts.

It has no evidentiary value, if there's an insurance claim or a charge against a suspect, a real estimate will be obtained either by the insurance company or the charging detective.
 
Call this a blend of ideas: Speak to the airport director/manager about it. If they are not willing to handle the repair, you get it done, with the ugliest piece of metal you can find to replace it.
 
The person responsible for the damage has come forward and a contractor has looked at the harm and is preparing a repair estimate.

All should be back to normal in a few weeks at most.

Was it a glider pilot?
 
No but they did have a glider in their hangar doing something...no real knowledge of the event except the owner took responsibility.
