Great Lakes/Midwest April Lunch

Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. Lo and behold there is an airport (KSKY) right next door. I attempted to make the trip last year but heavy convection nixed it so we drove. The next attempt will probably happen in May.

That airport is closed =( I believe it was sold to Cedar Point last year and is being converted to extra parking.

PCW (where the Feb lunch was) is currently the best Cedar Point option I think...

Edit - I know it was closing at the end of last year. Why can't I find any information on it? My google-fu is borked. http://www.sanduskyregister.com/article/2167446

What is the date? Leslie and I will be in Cleveland the weekend of the 20th for the 99's North Central Section meeting.

There is no NOTAM saying it is closed.
 
The FBO announced intent to sell last year but there's been no indication that they actually moved. Not sure what the deal is, but for now the airport appears to be open.

Perhaps there's been a delay? Either way there's a couple of airports nearby that are close enough. It beats driving from the northwest portion of IN.
 
I've been wondering about KSKY ever since I got the new MDOT Aeronautical Chart. Even though it's in Ohio, the Michigan chart goes down that far and it shows it with a big X through the circle. But as Ed said, no NOTAM. So I have to assume they got the info, but it was premature.

Anyway, since Grant and Leslie are going to be in Cleveland, maybe we should do KBKL?

I've been wanting to fly to kbkl. I work in tower city a mile away. I'm pretty sure I could drive there and help transport.

Lunch at the casino?

Aw, man. That's too bad. I wanted to fly there and go to Cedar Pointe last summer, but my wife had to have spinal fusion surgery in her neck. This summer is bad for other reasons.

Full disclosure: I flew there once, about 9 years ago now, and got ripped off by the FBO ($25 ramp fee for a spam can) before yet ANOTHER landing fee bill arrived in the mail from the Port Authority. So there's little love lost between me and the place. Still, it's as spectacular a view as can be had flying into any urban field around the Lakes. I'd do it again, once, for the experience and for good company, I just wouldn't make a habit of it.
 
Isn't Cleveland just a suburb of Michigan??? I sure don't claim it.
 
No where to eat at BKL. Don't know if there is anything within walking distance. Cuyahoga (CGF) has the same problem.
 
I'm based out of BKL and CGF. No on-field food at BKL. They used to have one with a great view, and also Hornblower's Barge and Grill, but both are closed.

From BKL it's an easy walk to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Browns Stadium, but no food to be had in either of those. It's probably a mile walk to all the good restaurants downtown where you could get just about anything.

CGF has JB Milano's on field, but I've never been there. It's open irregularly and I've heard no good reviews of the place. Nothing within walking distance.

Most of the good food is south or east of the Cleveland area, which might be getting a bit far for some of the more westerly types. I'm thinking of Carroll County (TSO) or Franklin (FKL) here.

Also, I had not heard that SKY was closing. That's very sad.

EDIT: There's also the 356th Fighter Group restaurant at KCAK. Need to get a crew car to drive around the perimeter of the airport, but last time I was there I got a suburban with no difficulty. There's also one of the same chain at KCLE, but that might be a bit much.

There's a few of us around Dayton. I would be willing to transport from either I19 or MGY to the National Museum of the USAF @ WPAFB and there may be others who can drive. They have a "restaurant" there or there are plenty of others nearby. Its about 20-30 minutes away from either field. I19 has a crew car and rent a car on site. Don't know about MGY.

The Museum is well worth it for as long as you want to stay. I was Chief Engineer on a couple of the birds there (F-22, F-23 and C-17) and worked on a bunch of the others so I can offer some insight into the designs and programs.

Won't be back until ~ April 10 from Steamboat Springs and gone the weekend of 19 April.

I have moved my Spare Grille to the hangar and plan so have those who want to fly in to MGY, Bring some fixens and we can grille out. Those that want to head to the Museum can be ferried by any of the locals there. April may still be a bit cool the way the weather has been but perhaps it would cooperate. This is a bit out of the way for some of the MI folks but certainly open to who ever wants to come down. No date just a thought.

Speaking only for myself, it's 183 nm which is closer than 05C for sure. I'd be up for it. :yes:

Since I will be moving back to OH next week and out of pocket the weekend of 19 Apr and the FAAST National Stand Down is also that same weekend at MGY, might I suggest 27 April at either MGY or I19?

Either is fine with me but I have no grill @I19. ;)

I flew joint missions with the F-111 that is there.
 
I hope KSKY doesn't close. I grew up 4 miles from the airport, had my first airplane ride and first flight lesson from there. I've driven past the airport hundreds if not thousands of times. I also used to live 4 blocks from (the old) Mr. Griffing. He used an airplane propeller for his mailbox post. But if you want to stay in Northern Ohio, fly to Put-in-Bay. Jump the $5 taxi or rent bikes or golf carts. Go downtown and get pizza at Frosty's or some lobster bisque on the Boardwalk.
 
I will check the calendar with the misses and make sure I am not scheduled for anything. The museum is open from 0900 till 1700 local time. We could shuttle people back and forth during the day and plan for a cookout around 5 or 6. Whether at I19 or MGY makes no matter to me. Weather permitting that should leave time for everyone to get home.
 
I have booked a plane and the family to be there. It is about 2.25 hours so probably won't get there until 1 PM EDT or so.
 
Will see if my engine is back together. They said the cylinders were supposed to be back this week. Now they are saying next week - which in reality probably means July.
 
Ok I have clearance for the event, just need to decide between MGY and I19. I think I19 might be a bit closer to the Museum, but not by much. Weigh in on this Geezer

Actually, the R&R HoF has at least one, and maybe two, restaurants. BTDT.

Not that I'd recommend them but...just sayin'.
 
I19 is probably a little closer to the Museum but MGY is next to a Mall for those who are not interested in the Museum. MGY did have the Wright B Flyer in a hanger but since the crash, I have no clue about what might be there now. I19 is sort of isolated. Both will be about a 30 minute ride, flight line to Museum entrance.

My vote is neutral since I am almost exactly between the two. ;)

So which weekend are we talking about now? 20-21 or 27-28? And which day should we shoot for, Sat or Sun?
