got some time in a Beaver the other day

Denali last week.

Great sightseeing. Unfortunately, no stick time for me.

I dream about riding in a beaver. A lot.

We're finally leaving today. Noonish. It's been fun. I didn't fly (purposely avoided it) but did gobs of other fun stuff.

It was great to meet you and Joan last week.

Sat right seat in a beaver on floats in junuae . Was a great ride.

This thread isn't what I thot it was about...

On a more serious note, the Beaver is near the top of a LOOONG list of planes I hope to get to fly some day.

Yeah. That was a lot of fun. I have so many pictures I'd break the internet if I tried to post them all.

We took the red-eye back home. Train pulled into Anchorage about 830pm, we got our bags, and grabbed a cab straight over to the airport for an 11pm flight.

Nice pics! How was the ride? When we took the ride in Talkeetna Air Taxi's C-185 we were surprised how smooth it was, even near the mountain.

K2 has at least one Beaver and 2 turbine Otters, all with skis. I commented about how smooth it was, too. We were circling inside a basin at 9500' (summit is about 20k), airport is about 500'. We had partial flaps and were at about 80kts. The only time we got any slight bumps at all was when we went through a narrow gap above a saddle ridge. Even then, it was still smoother than what passes for a smooth day here.

We did see a Talkeetna Air Taxi along the way. Our guy said he'd circle one more time to let that guy go since there's no way we could have beaten him back.

Imteresting airport, they have a FSS on the field that acts as a semi ATC, giving advisories on who left, when, and in what direction.

Our pilot asked who wanted to sit up front and I went all Arnold Horshack. Then I found out there are no right side controls, d'oh!

The TAT C-A185E we rode in met an inglorious end a couple of months ago:

Yeah. Flying in Alaska is a very small world.

On our flight from SEA into ANC the guy sitting next to me noticed I had my N7 out on my lap and was trying to follow our flight on Garmin Pilot. He then pulled out his phone and showed me his 182 that he keeps in Palmer. He recommended a place that rents a 172 (I think he said $150 wet) and gave me a route to follow for a nice sightseeing trip. I told him we had a flight scheduled in Talkeetna and he showed me those same pictures - I remember seeing them posted somewhere right after it happened. He knew both pilots and both planes involved.

When we were at Talkeetna, I didn't ask our pilot about it. I didn't want to bring it up in front of any other passengers that might already be nervous about flying in a small plane.

I got to do the same out of Seattle on a work tour visiting some islands in BC. It was a blast.

More importantly, Matt, did you get to try any of this while you were up there?

It's a pretty damned tasty beer. I'm thinking about shipping myself a 12 pack to bring to Gaston's. :goofy:

Absa-friggin-lutely.

The guy sitting in front of me on the train "drank his way across Alaska". Every time we'd pass through an area with it's own beer, he'd order one from the bar.

I kind of did the same thing while we were up there, just not all at once like that guy.

Not gonna go there. No siree!

:goofy:

I'm having trouble getting my Beaver started. Is there something on the checklist I'm missing?

Besides there is something wrong with the radio. The transmission is all fuzzy.

Jim

It was interesting to see the way the pilot worked the controls. He used the elevator and rudder trim to pretty much fly the airplane. Once he set the power for a 500fpm climb (and eventually level flight), and set both trims, he pretty much flew hands-off. I kept peeking, and he'd just use slight pressure of a single thumb on the control yoke for minor adjustments. It was a pretty good lesson for me:

"Controlling a Beaver with no hands - just power and trim adjustments."

Well this thread went down quickly.
