Started out at .39 IPS and we finished at .02, the difference is very noticeable and the plane is much smoother now. If I ever buy another plane, I'll be sure to have this done as soon as I take ownership. The guy said it's probably good for 500 hours or so, so it's a very economical maintenance item. I used Jim Jeffries Airworks and couldn't have been more delighted with the service.

It's also a good sign of mx (or lack thereof) when buying a plane, no balance, PPL owned, not very mechanically inclined, I'll beat the person up much more on price.

Yup...

I am BIG fan of dynamically balancing a prop..

If you don't mind my asking, how much did it cost to have done?

We had it done in Dallas by one of the top RV guys in the country, so I hear. I noticed a difference right away...ours was pretty off too.

I piece milled a bit of a video together of the experience -we paid $250.

Ken, did you notice any difference in the cockpit? What is different afterwards? And how did they balance the prop, did they file off some material?

Prop Balancing may well be the best bang for the buck in aviation maintenance. Cheap and effective.

They add screws and washers to the prop wheel. Some planes will feel a major difference, others will not. Mine did not because my engine has camshaft dampeners in it (IO-540), so they were absorbing all of the excess energy. I noticed a difference on start-up and shut-down. I went from a .54 to a .04.

.54......:yikes::yikes::yikes::eek::eek::hairraise:....
Holy siht.....

I tend to do them every annual. It's cheap and allows you to catch subtle changes in vibration which can be precursors to major problems, before they become destructive.

I had mine as apart of my pre-buy. I cant remember the exact number but it was a pretty significant jump

Anybody have any shops in or near Houston that they'd recommend for a prop balance?

Oh, so that's what you kids call it today. In my day we called it getting lucky.

What? Wait, I thought we were talking about something else....my bad...:lol::lol:

Ha.....

And to add to the thread drift..... All props have spinners.... And spinners are fun to *uck....

I have been noticing some vibration lately, mostly around 2200 rpm at approach speeds (80KIAS). Not happy about it, starting to get paranoid.

Anybody know someone who can check/fix prop balance in the Central TX area?
