What would they be worth installed, keeping in mind that the current equipment would be traded in. KLN94, KY97, Collins NAV, Collins Com.

With my panel upgrade, it has been found that the only way to hook up the Collins NAV to the Aspen Avionics is through an interface module, costing more money. I also would need to buy a glide slope module for it, since it does not have one. More money. So the installer comes up with a great bargain on a used KX155 w/o GS and a new GNS430. It will simplify his installation a bit, too, I believe, which is a big motivator for him.

Any ideas what it would be worth? Just trying to see if the deal is a good one.

A few thoughts.

Our Aztec has dual KX155s each with KI209 indicators and a KLN94. I've thought several times about a GNS430 as it, and an STEC GPPS box would add roll steering ability to our Stec 60-2. But it's a hard move to make. I keep an eye out for used 430s, the 155s, and 209's just to stay interested.

We bought our KLN94 used, $1200 plus our old KLN88. Used KX155 w/o glideslopes run around $1000, used 430s w/o WAAS run around $4500, with WAAS around $6500 plus.

If I were to tear into our panel to replace the KLN94 with a used GNS430 and a used GI-106 ($1600?) minus our KI209 ($1200), I'd want such a deal on the radios and trade in value for the used stuff that it would seem that the install was free.

6500 plus 1600 minus 1200 minus 1000 minus 1200.... so I'd want to get my deal done for around $4700 or less installed and he walks away with my radios, trays, antennas ect. I know there's little chance of that happening, and that I'd end up with a WAAS GPS, but that's what I'd want in order to go through that kind of a mess.

I doubt you'd get that big a price break on a used 430, they're still the cat's meow. Why not just buy a new one? The installation costs are the same, and at least you get a warranty.

I have the Collins Com and VIR-351 NAV Receiver (w/GS) coupled to the Collins IND-351 VOR / LOC / Glideslope Indicator. I'm with you Bryon, also interested in the upgrade to a KX155 but with GS. The Garmin 530 is already in my panel so that part is complete.

I would give a hard look at the 430W if I was doing the upgrade. I wish my 530 had WAAS.

Let's hope it's a 430W. I don't think they even make the straight 430 anymore.

It is. So how about some worthwhile numbers? I have my quote, and I went ahead with it, but I wanted to see if it was really a good bargain. Sounds like most of my current stuff is relatively worthless, except maybe for the KLN94.

I would try to find a KX155 with glideslope if possible. It is really nice to have that back up glideslope in addition to the 430W. That is the way my plane is equipped.

I believe the 430 non WAAS will not be supported soon. I'm not sure of the actual cutoff date but it's worth researching. At that point the cheapest repair will be around $3K to upgrade to WAAS.

My guess for your install is $13K, but then again there's no penalty if I'm wrong so the number came from a deep dark place.

Met the Garmin guy at our field a few weeks ago. I am pulling a dead KX155/GS and the very old GNS400 out of the plane and putting in a 430W to make up the difference. Garmin guy sez: By September 30, 2010 Garmin is no longer supporting any non-waas installations. No parts, no service. Oh, its okay for you to upgrade the non-waas unit to waas, but who would do that for an old 400? Man have they got us you know where....

BTW: While I am having the system rewired with shielded wiring and a proper grounding scheme, I have a deal to pull out a suspect sigtronics intercom for a N.A.T. stereo/mp3 intercom that was pulled from a beech going in for a full glass upgrade...anyone have any experience with N.A.T. equipment?

Thanks

N.A.T.? Never heard of 'em!

Aren't they still going to be providing databases, though? I'm not sure I see a real problem with it. Part of why costs are high in the aviation industry is because you have a whole lot of different products with low numbers being manufactured, all of which are being supported. So long as you can still get the databases, I don't see an issue. If the 530 I have to deal with breaks, that's a good opportunity to upgrade it to a 530W anyway.

I believe you are correct Ted.

I have not heard anything about Jeppessen discontinuing database support.

I also agree that if you have a working non-WAAS version it is not a mandate to upgrade. When it breaks, I expect most problems would be fixed by the WAAS upgrade.

The big issue is for a new install or buying a used one is that the cheapest repair will be the upgrade.

Jepp is still supporting the database as far as I know..I my case, since I needed the comm and GS that died with the KX155 it made sense to upgrade to the 430W

BTW: N.A.T. is Northern Airborne Technologies
