Much of the daily material of our lives is now dematerialized and outsourced to a far-flung, unseen network. The stack of letters becomes the e-mail database on the computer, which gives way to Hotmail or Gmail. The clipping sent to a friend becomes the attached PDF file, which becomes a set of shared bookmarks, hosted offsite. The photos in a box are replaced by JPEGs on a hard drive, then a hosted sharing service like Snapfish. The tilting CD tower gives way to the MP3-laden hard drive which itself yields to a service like Pandora, music that is always “there,” waiting to be heard. But where is “there,” and what does it look like?
On a related note, I wonder if the PoA server room has one of these and if Jesse's been tempted to hit it...

Fossett had a button like that. A boss tried it.

A company a friend of mine used to work for had scram switches on the walls and the big "warning--leave immediately when alarm sounds--halon dispersing" sign.

Fun stuff.

But I'd love to trigger an MRI quench. :D

Now there's a scram switch.

So.... we have a new pope?

I once had a customer accidentally bump one of these...they installed a plastic guard the next morning.:yikes: About the same time the big Unix box finished its fsck.

Fossett Corp at the time was one of exactly two firms that cleared options trades on the Chicago Board Options Exchange. They also moved 1% of the volume of the NYSE. What was behind that big red button was an AS400 that worked hard overnight doing the trade clearing.

Killing power was a bad thing. As I heard it, it happened in the afternoon.

What if we flat-out don't get it? :dunno:

The ballots are then all burnt by the Scrutineers with the assistance of the Secretary of the College and the Masters of Ceremonies. If the first scrutiny held in any given morning or afternoon does not result in an election, the cardinals proceed to the next scrutiny immediately; the papers from both scrutinies are burnt together at the end of the second scrutiny. The colour of the smoke signals the results to the people assembled in St Peter's Square. Dark smoke signals that the ballot did not result in an election, while white smoke signals that a new Pope was chosen.

Latency concerns are not limited to Wall Street; it is estimated that a 100-millisecond delay reduces Amazon’s sales by 1 percent.

Wow. Why? People are that impatient and close their browser? I can understand that if you were experiencing 10 second delays, but not 100-millisecond delays. 1% of Amazon's sales is a LOT.

While this is/was an interesting thread, every time I see the Title after hitting "New Posts" it looks like "gReek porn" to me, something that I was quite willing to ignore until I managed to read the words correctly.

Dang, I was about to post almost that exact same comment!:yikes: (Especially after those pictures of Greg and Jesse, and Grant and Jesse!)
