Gaston's Fly In 2015 - October 8-11th

No need for the car, someone will fly over and pick you up if attending the fly-in.

KBPK - nice airport, courtesy car is a Ford Mustang. :)

Yup, super super close--just above Gaston's, on the ridge to the east. Makes it easy to depart Gaston's without a large fuel load (important on a grass strip and hot and humid day for some planes!), and then pop over to KBPK for fuel before continuing. Also gives you an instrument approach, and drive over to Gastons (or they'll come get you).

Fixededed it. :D

What is the nearest paved runway option @ Gastons?

KBPK (Ozark Regional - Mountain Home)- Big, grown up, has an ILS and full-service FBO. It is, from takeoff to touchdown, about a 3-minute flight from Gaston's or vice-versa.

It is about a 30 minute drive, maybe a bit more.

You'll have no trouble with Gaston's runway, but if you want someone with experience to right-seat you first time in, that's OK, we do that all the time. Of course, if you decide you don't want to land at Gaston's, either someone(s) will shuttle you from BPK in a plane, or Gaston's will send a van for you (gratis except tips).

Man, a lot of replies while I typed mine out. I need to learn to type faster.

Is your wheel pant clearance really that low?

I've put the skylane in there with no problems and it has pants.

I was advised by the CISP to avoid grass.
Already had one incident in Athens where we towed it onto grass and managed to find a soft spot and it ended up resting on the left pant and busted part of it.

It is fixed now but don't want to mess with it.
There are enough people on COPA with similar reports that I have decided to avoid unpaved runways.

On the other hand, when I win the Terminal museum raffle I will probably just fly that one to the grass strip.

There's a pic of a cirrus with pants and all in there in the trike thread.

Yeah. Those wheel pants are $1800 a piece though :hairraise:
I will do the paved one and catch a ride.

And those who don't give him ****, are given **** for not giving him ****.

Wow. Seen lots of Cirri there. 'Course, it is not my plane, and karma being the beeotch she is, best not to tempt fate.

But what if somebody wants to leave you a present or raccoon in the airplane while you're not looking?

I posted a pic of a cirrus with pants at Gastons earlier in this thread. I didn't have a chance to talk to the pilot, but it didn't sound like they had any issues....

Sounds like another good reasons to stick with a bonanza !!!

LOL! Further convinced.
Is there an airfield even further away

The clearance of your pants and our lower gear doors look to be about the same. But we all know Mooneys don't do grass.

Not a lot of clearance there.

...which is why, at last year's Gaston's, there were more Mooneys than any other airframer's aircraft. :D

Ok, I may try to make it this year. I need to pick up the 170 in Northwest Arkansas and fly it here (looks like I'm keeping it for another year or two) and Gaston's happens to be on the way! Gotta get approval from higher authority first, but would probably arrive Friday and leave early Sunday.

Are there any rooms left at this point or is camping an option?

No camping at Gaston's, but I'm sure rooms/cabins are still available...it's a bit place.

Alternately, since you're only staying one night, you might be able to crash in someone's cabin. I'd offer a spot in mine but I already have one or two of the PoA Honyocks staying with me.

If I can get the OK, I'll be there two nights (Fri/Sat). I'll try and reserve something this weekend if I get the go-ahead.

Teresa and I have a deluxe cottage, Thursday - Sunday, and it has two rooms (we only need one).

So that means we have another bedroom with two single beds in it, and can accommodate others that are staying the same or fewer days, $50/night per person for your share of the $200/night room.

I don't THINK we have somebody taking it yet, but I could be wrong--if you've already booked our room (Greg and Sharon??) let me know so I don't give it to somebody else.

I'll take one of them.

OK, I searched this thread and didn't see anything yet about meal plans, and we need to start the arrival roster.

So how about a group dinner at our cabin Saturday night?

I'm going to put my smoker in the plane and bring a couple of prime briskets, some turkey and sausages.

Y'all get to supply the beer, beverages and sides... slaw, potato salad, banana pudding/pie/cobbler, corn, etc. Chime in if you plan to attend, and what you'd like to bring as sides, so we don't end up with 14 potato salads and nothing else.

These briskets are about $50 each, so I'll have a donation jar for those that want to help offset the meat costs, but donations aren't expected. Anything above and beyond actual meat costs will be donated to Angel Flight.

Here's the one I cooked this week... we're bringing the Smoking Double-U to 3M0 this year!

So if a fella was to fly up from Alabama on Saturday, what are the chances he and his sleeping bag could find a spot for the night? Ed, you have guilted me into probably coming, so I can bunk with you, right?

Ha. I'm already staying with someone else!

No problem. Bring the biggest can of DEET you can afford along. Spray the c$$p out of the ground and lay your sleeping bag over the toxic area. You'll be fine for a while before the ticks find you ;)

Seriously, if you have an airplane, there are a lot of options to find a hotel in one of the local towns.

Plus with everyone that's attending, someone will have a couch or something available for a night or two.

Yeah, I figure I can find a spot or catch a ride to a motel. I would reserve something, but I probably won't know for sure I'm coming until a week or so before. Plus, I don't own a plane, so there is the rental being available and not down for Mx. But I really want to come since you made me feel like ***** in the Ron thread.;)

Troy, your brisket looks absolutely intoxicating. We're in. Are you going to create a sign up sheet for attendees and what we want to bring to add to the festivities?

Argh. We would LOVE to sample Troy's brisket, but we will be in Europe, celebrating 30 years together!

Y'all have fun!

It was there at the end of post 148. Just copy paste and add a line! Also serves as the Gaston's arrival roster.
