Gaston's Fly In 2015 - October 8-11th

If someone wants to come get me and take me back Sunday, I'll spot you the gas. It will save me money over the rental car. Whoever does I'll need their number. Since I'm jumpseating there is a possibility I won't make the flight.

Type rating in a Embraer ERJ-145. :D I would fly it in but there is a limitation on hard surface runways only

I'd be happy to pick you up as I'm fast but I'm not staying at the grass strip so there would be ferrying required in between.

May be a PITA if we go that route

Troy, how do you think we are doing on side dishes? do we need to bring a couple? Or is there something else I can bring?

We have about 35 people coming, including Ted and Laurie and their kids, so let's figure 40 folks. Here's the list so far on food (and liquor):

Troy & Teresa W...........BRISKET! MEAT!
Lance & Sue F.............Hors d'oevres
Spike Cutler..............? (I think Spike is bringing his appetite)
Mike Farlow...............Beverages (soft and hard)
Bryan Turner..............Homebrew and some sort of meat.
Brian (maybe norene)......veggie meat?
Tim.......................Choc Mocha Ice Cream
Jimmie/Kate J.............Bacon wrapped shrimp?
Kent & Kelsey.............Consult my personal chef.
Jesse.....................Crown
Dana (plus one?)..........Homebrew, bacon
Greg and Sharon B.........Whatever is needed
Grant & Leslie............??
Tim & Susan...............Asian Coleslaw
Bruce & Susan.............?
JohnC & Susan.............Pie

Here's what we still need, folks, so if you're looking for a way to contribute, here it is:

I don't see ANY potato or macaroni salad or fruit, or bread. Cold side dishes complement hot meats. These should be made fresh that day though, you know, mayonnaise and all... so if anybody would like to volunteer to make (or buy) some to share, that would be fantastic. Chips?

Definitely need sliced onion and dill pickles. Iced tea, both sweet and unsweet.

I've got about 70# of meats, pre-cook weight. Three full briskets that I'll SLICE, one massive pork shoulder (pulled pork sandwiches would require buns, onions, pickles, and cole slaw), beef sausages and a big bottle of Stubbs BBQ sauce (the meat won't need it, but if you're a naked-meat-weenie and like to drown good brisket in BBQ sauce I'll give you a hot dog and keep the brisket for those of us that appreciate it!).

I offer automobile ferrying to mountain home airport if needed.

If that will work out I'd much appreciate it. When are you leaving back for Dallas Brian? I'm easy on the flight out. Anyone that's going by a commerical airport can drop me off. I have to do some jumpseating anyway. My car will be in Houston so I'll work my way back down there.

There's a really good chance I'm going to need a ride Friday evening from mountain home. Either because I don't beat sunset in the 205 or take the Malibu and stick to pavement.

Malibu ground clearance with a two blade prop is just too close to me risk. The prop is a significant distance in front of the nose which makes things pretty hairy with bumps and slopes.

Dont forget there is a Walmart not that far away that we can get onions, pickles, buns, and maybe some ready to eat potato salad and stuff once we take inventory. Since I think my wife is only making 3 pies, we'll gladly hit Walmart for some other stuff if need be

Agreed, a local store run is usually the best way to handle these things. Thanks!!

We're headed out to Dallas (Fort Worth side, actually) Sunday after breakfast... if W&B work out right, there's a possibility (not a commitment) of riding back with us. I can likely drop you off at DFW, too, if that's where you need to go to jumpseat back to HOU.

I will probably head out first thing Sun Morning.
I want to have some Sunday afternoon to chill also after I get back, KenJr has 2 more hours to fly to get home.

If we fly ourselves, we can bring a couple gallons of iced tea and will make some cornbread.

Just like a $2 hooker, I'm gonna hit it and quit it. I'll Only be there for a couple hours as a token arrival. We are packing up for a week at the deer camp and now leaving Sat afternoon instead of Sat AM. Plus I now have been asked to give someone a ride to a wedding which is on the way....ill prolly just push him out at 1k ago with a couple Walmart bags and a rabbits foot though.

As long as I'm not stranded in North Arkansas I'm cool either way.

I will be glad to make any grocery store runs for miscellaneous needed items - chips, bread etc.

Anyone needing lifts to/from mountain home PM me to get my number. I'll be there Thursday mid-day and will leave Sunday mid-day as well.

Sue will also bring baked beans.

Put us down for Potato Salad!

Does this guy, TangoWhiskey, know what he is doing with a smoker? Is it worth the flight time from Denver to sample the product? Is this a lunch thing or a dinner thing on Saturday?

Hard to say how good any part will be, but the assortment of cool people, food, and at a sweet spot I reckon is not to be missed. And with two tents, we can name one the Spin Zone and kick any malcontents into the other tent :)

Got myself night current so fingers crossed the ceilings are high enough and we will fly in Friday night to KBPK, and join the party Saturday. I forgot how much that 3rd dimension that you can see in light really helps with landings.

The pups are standing guard to ensure nobody steals your meal. ~ 65# of meat just went in the smoker!

Looking like it will be a good day to fly - but might be a little windy on Saturday though. I should be there by about noon.

Still need bread or something to go with whats in the smoker? (Assuming you can get it past the guards there.) If no one else is bringing bread of some kind - put me down and I'll get some nice options..

Brian, nice bread options would be great!

I have no clue what I'm doing. First time I've ever smoked meats, but I figure I can get a good sample size this way.

It's an early dinner; let's plan 4:30/5:00 so people that need to get out before sunset can do so.

Clark, we're flying all the way from Kansas City to sample Troy's smoking. :)

Troy knows his way around the Magic Smoke. I am, for myself, cherishing the knowledge that I'll be sampling the smoked meats!

May take you up on that grocery store run.... sounds like I'll have access to kitchen facilities, so I'll plan on making fresh cornbread on-site.

As to the quality of the smoking... one of my friends always tells me he can't wait to get my meat in his mouth. He even posts that on Facebook. I'm SO glad he's talking about the brisket!

That said, it's never quite as good reheated as it is fresh--and I'm smoking it today, resting tonight, chilling overnight, vacuum packing it in the morning before we fly out... Saturday will be a low and slow return to eating temps in a cabin oven. The bark won't be as good doing it this way, I think, but we won't suffer from hunger, either. I wonder if a few minutes over hot coals at the very end, in those BBQ pits outside the cabins, would help the bark... hmmm.

I will update for Bryan. Since it sounds like the meat is pretty well taken care of, I was going to bake up some cookies for him to bring. Will probably pick up a watermelon too that y'all can slice up day of, as well as a bag or two of chips.

I will do everything in my power to ensure the cookies are in no way shaped like anything that might be considered phallic.

Except the exact opposite.

Bryan, as the resident Cirrus driver, can we expect you to demo pulling the chute on takeoff? I understand it's in the POH as a normal procedure.

Be careful what you offer, there is going to be a lot of people that might be willing to contribute to a pot to see that.

I'd throw in $10. :)

Awesome, thanks Eren! How'd we forget watermelon?!

Will someone have wheels, or can someone secure a Gastons van to pick us up from Mountain Home Friday evening?

There is a good chance I'll beat sunset but I'm not going to risk a prop strike with the Malibu.

Awesome!! Another canopy on the flight line, and good friends to share some BBQ!

Dry fitted my 10x10 EZ Up in the 182. Might work since our seats will fold forward. So we might be well covered in the shade department.
