Gaston's Fly In 2015 - October 8-11th

Looks like I will be cooking breakfast at the local EAA flyin the morning of the 10th. I'll be at Gastons about noonish..

Looks like it is me and KenJr

If someone has one that is collapsible and can fit in my cabin, I can haul it.
I have a good chunk of my UL remaining.

Edit: but that said, we need to be ferried from the paved field to gaston's so we have to consider the fairy if we are hauling anything down.

Mike's is collapsible. And you're close to him! Bring his!

Well, considering the forecast highs are in the 60s and 70s (I know it's still a over a week away) I don't think having a sunshade will be anywhere near as important as it was when June was our month...we may far rather be basking in the beautiful fall sun. Of course, it's a rain shade also!

so we have to consider the fairy if we are hauling anything down.

I don't want to know who you're talking about. Unless, of course, it's Ed since I'm sharing a cabin with him!

Bryan, if you want to meet up this next few days and do a dry fit of my canopy system, lets do that...

Its one of the Coleman branded EZ Up canopies. Collapsed, it's a 8"x8"x66" container.

If it was just myself and another coming up, carrying it in the Skylane is do-able. But with a third, I'm concerned about safety if we hit turbulence.

Too bad I don't have a ski tube that replaces the rear plastic bulkhead and fits down into the empennage. That would allow it to ride "flat" and not interfere with control cables or wiring.

How would you compare Gaston's field to Cedar Mills? Starting to rethink taking the 10 on soft field. I have landed at Cedar Mills a few times without issue.

I've never considered 3M0 to be a soft field. And there have been years when Mooneys outnumbered any other make. That being said, I haven't been there in a few years.

I'd same about the same. Cedar Mills was well designed in terms of type of soil and how well it drained. And even in heavy use periods, ruts were always minimal.

Gaston's is very similar. Good ground, only a few shallow crosswise hills/valleys. Your -10 will do fine.

Now if we could only talk Bryan into landing there by flying overhead and deploying that chute of his....

I was excited to make it this year - but sometimes life throws a curveball and **** happens. One of our pilots self-grounded for a medical issue in the middle of September and I am covering until it is resolved. I was hoping it would be worked out by now, but it is not.

I'm really hoping to make it to a fly-in again. Soon, hopefully.

NERTZ!!!

We should all fly over there for breakfast!! ;-)

I know, right? A couple a bucks for eggs, bacon and pancakes sounds good. Of course, the 40 in gas doesn't really apply. But how shocked would the chapter be when a ****-ton of planes just showed up and are like, he, we heard you guys were serving breakfast.

Just let me know if you do - we can stock up the night before...

I'm a regular at 4M3 (Carlisle):
http://www.airnav.com/airport/4M3
http://www.eaaul122.org/EAAUL122/Home.html

Good group of folks. Some retired air force, a couple of corporate fliers and I think the airline captain still shows from time to time. Lots of us weekend aviators as well. There might be young eagles, twenty somethings, or even our 80 year old Navion restoration guru (and retired air force pilot). Good group.

Sometimes the aircraft are pretty sparse if the weather is less than VFR, but they still drive in and meet. If it is sunny, waves of just about anything might arrive - from RV swarms, a few of us old Bo fliers, Navions, war birds and even some biplanes (Wacos, Stearmans, etc.).

Ya'll come ... but do let me know if a lot of you are headed our way so I can warn the others. Wallmart is up the road so we can adjust...

Is it cheating if I sneak out Saturday and go do a TnG in Branson just to add another state to my map?

Heck no. Why would that be cheating?

Didn't know if in order to claim a state you had to Stop and get out, Eat a meal, Spend the night, mark your territory, Have relations with a local lady of the night, Have a beer, hug a sheep, etc

Wasn't certain exactly what the min requirement was to fill it in.

Judging by that other thread that's going on, coitus.

Alright, let's have some Fun...

Who is flying from the greatest Distance to get here?
I got KenJr coming from Georgetown which puts him at 429 miles from Gaston's

No. One of the routine activities is to go fly. I didn't do rides in Ken's Mooney or Dave's airplane. I want to fix that this year.

Gotta at least have lunch at Famous Dave's for it to count!

I must admit, I've never just landed at an airport to "claim it" or the state. Personally I do think that's cheating.

My most "'iffy" claim ever was Florida. I flew an iron worker down to buy beer. He was out, it was Sunday, the part of Georgia we were in didn't allow beer sales on Sunday. A good excuse to fly! I had add'l trips into FL after that for more legitimate reasons but that was my first landing in the state! ;)

When we stopped at SGF, the lady at the FBO just pointed us to the row of fast food joints. Wish I had known there was better! By the way, their crew car policy is pretty awesome. 3 hours! They do charge a nominal fee if you're longer than that, though.

Famous Dave's is on the field at Branson...at least they used to be...

I looked at Famous Dave's web page. If the food is anywhere near as appetizing as the photo, we might want to plan a lunch flyout.

Cracked one open last night.

Not the worst I have produced but definitely a later beer like 3rd or beyond :(

Not quite in dare territory. Should have gone with a safer kit I had used before.
At any rate, I will bring something locally and professionally produced as well.

If you plan on going to the little mart you told me about at Carroll Blvd and Hickory Street, let me know and I'll meet you there... I want to check out their offerings and possibly bring a few of those to Gaston's.

ok, I will probably hit that place one night before the trip and then go load the plane. We can coordinate and see if your shade will fit as well.

Get me a six pack of In Heat Wheat by Flying Dog

Besides beers, anyone interested in whiskeys, bourbons or other spirits?

468 straight line KCVC 3M0 for me. (Although straight line takes me through Atlanta Bravo which ATC ain't going to let happen.)

Looks like they are Downtown... Link to map: https://goo.gl/maps/SFcPB2YMq2N2

There's still one at the airport also...I just called and confirmed. I don't know why FD's website doesn't reflect this...we went through this same thing last year too when we were contemplating a lunch fly-out.

Also, regarding quality. It's okay...it's not up to Texas bbq standards, but decent. At least other locations are...
