Is there anything that legally replaces a GI106A like a G5 or similar digital CDI for an IFR bird?

I hope so...that's exactly what I'm doing in my plane. I'm tearing out both the KLN 94 and KX 155A that feed the B/K equivalent of the GI106A. It's being replaced (along with the DG) with a G5 HSI in the DG location. I don't think the G5 can be a drop-in replacement, but it will serve the function as an HSI, meaning no need to reinstall the CDI. Granted, G5 HSI is a pricey install compared to a simple overhaul of the CDI, but you get lots of advantages depending on how much you wire into the rest of your system. I think a stand alone install is five to six thousand.

What's driving the GI106A? That matters, to some extent.

The GTN will drive the G5 just fine.
