sweeet!! post lots of pics

I am pretty sure they will have a G3Xi .... faster processing and better screen and whatever new enhancement they are planning for the GTN Xi series

There are always plans for new and replacement panels from Garmin that are newer and better but they don’t always make it to market. The G3X is already considered TXi in their certified form. From my understanding there isn’t any upgrade path in the works... I hope. I just had it installed and from my experience it is already pleanty fast and boots quick enough. AHRS calibration could be faster but does it really need to be. The capabilities of it blow G1000xi and G500 out of the water and I have flown many hours with the G1000xi in a TBM910 and Cirrus SR22t. G3x is pleanty bright and the resolution works great next to the 750xi.

Enjoy the G3x Doering, you’ll love it. I sure am enjoying it.

I'm guessing we'll see that too. When, I don't know... But probably sooner rather than later. Generally, Garmin's (and everyone else's) gadgets last between 6-12 years on the market. 430 from 1999-2005, 430W 2005-2011 (you could still get it after that, but the GTN replaced it). The G1000 came out in 2004, the NXi at the very beginning of 2017. G600 came out in 2008 and G500 in 2009, and their TXi versions in late 2017. GTN 650/750 in 2011, Xi models in early 2020.

At least part of this is driven by component availability. If you wanted to build a GNS 430 today... You couldn't. No matter how much money you had, unless you wanted to open up an old-school chip fab in the process. The components that made up the 430 are simply no longer available. As technology in general goes, so goes avionics.

The G3X Touch came out for the experimental market in early 2014, so we just crossed the 6-year threshold about a month ago. I don't expect it'll be replaced this year since it's still relatively new to the certified market. The G5 came to certified in summer 2016, the next thing resembling it was the GI 275 earlier this year. So, figure a 3-4 year lag, and I expect we'll see a replacement for the G3X Touch - Or at least, a newer, nicer gadget that fits in the same market segment - Sometime around 2022-2023, and absolutely no later than the end of 2026.

Not sure what you mean by that, but the G3X is still a first-generation product. I expect we'll see something with a capacitive (as opposed to infrared) touchscreen with a "retina" resolution and faster processor. I also hope the bezel will shrink a LOT - That's probably my least favorite thing about the current G3X Touch is the amount of plastic around the edges that could have been used as screen space.

From my understanding there isn’t any upgrade path in the works... I hope.

There's always an upgrade in the works... But if you always wait for it, you'll never have any of the capabilities you have right now. So if you just installed it, enjoy it! You'll still be better off than 99% of us even after the new thing comes out.

Good information...do you know if the dimensions they quote for the G3X included the plastic bezel?
Don’t forget the experimental and certified divisions are run like separate companies.
For example the experimental side doesn’t use their ethernet interface or support some of the certified boxes (G3X doesn’t talk to GDL88). So they may be on a different time table.
Pretty much everything else has been upgraded in the last few years...come 2021 what will be the most dated product? I think It’s the G3X?

As flyingcheesehead stated, the G3X Touch, just entered the certified market. I don’t see an upgraded follow on product coming so soon after introduction. After all, the only difference between the experimental and certified versions is, well, certification paperwork and pricing. The units are identical.

I love my G3X Touch. If they released a newer version next week mine will still do everything it does now, and that's good by me. The support at G3Xpert has been excellent. Good luck with the install. There are tons of little wires to pin out!

The GDU 470 7" display uses a cutout of 7.30"x5.48" and has outer dimensions of 7.92"x6.01". The GDU 460 10" display uses a cutout of 10.31"x7.29" and has outer dimensions of 10.85"x7.82".

That's a tough one to predict, though. I was saying the exact same thing about the idea of having a certified G3X Touch when they had just introduced the G500 TXi. It seemed incredibly foolish for them to come out with something like that significantly cheaper practically right on the heels of introducing the more expensive one, but then it happened. G500 TXi came out in October 2017, and the G3X Touch was certified in March 2019, just a year and a half later. I doubt we'll see its replacement this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out next year. There's a very good chance it'll come out in 2022 ±1. ;)

How are the touchscreens in turbulence? I was reminded last week of how difficult it is to get my non-touch avionics under control as our normal summer turbulence arrives. Sometimes I think everyone else lives in calm, ∅ turbulence areas - and only I get shaken like a pecan tree at harvest time.

You need to grab the bezel with 2 fingers and a 3rd to do the touching. Either thumb&pinky on the side if hands are large or index&middle on the bottom seem to work. In moderate chop it’s doable, but in real turbulence...no. From what I have seen on YouTube, small plane pilots tend to dramatize chop into turbulence, YMMV.

Good to hear all this extra info guys!

Easy peasy. All it takes is a tap to manipulate the screen in any touch function there is. Switching comm frequencies, opening different screen views, all are super simple even in the bumps.

Awesome! I’m going the G3X route in my RV-9A later this year. Can’t wait to hear your report.
I’ve got a GTN-650.

I just did the same thing in my RV-6A in January. You won't regret it. Here are my before and after photos:

That's the second photo I've seen in two days of a G3X with the screen configured like that. Engine instruments on the left is foreign to me. Well, so is a map of half the US on my panel. ;) It demonstrates the versatility of the screen, though. Set it up to suit your preferences.

Sadly I had a magnetometer plug lose connection and I made the mistake of tapping the configure button on the ADHRS page. Stewie gets to do the ADHRS and magnetometer setup again before he goes flying. Dammit! Thinking I'll change the connector that caused the issue. A magnetometer that isn't reliable isn't much good. Those little -20 pins are a pain when they don't seat in the housing properly!

It's a G1000 thing and those don't let you move it.

But on the G1000, the engine instruments are on the left of the MFD, which is to the right of you... ;)

I still haven't decided which way I'd prefer it.

Can you choose left or right for the engine information strip on the G3X?
