Flyers,

The 696 now has geo-referenced approach charts, STAR's and DP's available. There is a one time fee of 499.00 to unlock the software inside the 696 and then you have to purchase a year's subscription for.about 275.00 AND there is a one time fee from Jepp of 100.00 dollars for their software to put on your computer. That's 875.00!! Has anyone bought this yet?

Also, I understand that Garmin will have the government's geo-referenced FlightCharts available soon, but I am wondering how much they will be and if they will "disable" after their expiration date as the originals did. I hope we can purchase a one time set and are not forced to purchase a year's subscription as Jepp requires.

I have the NACO geo-referenced charts on my GPSMAP 696. The cost was $95 for the chart one time download. They used to expire after 180 days, this has been changed and now they live forever. The software is free, the FlightCharts subscription is $95 for a one time or $395 for an annual subscription.

IOW, there are significantly cheaper options that Jeppeson.
Just bought the gov georeferenced charts. You were all correct...95 dollars was the final cost.

Tough descision...95 dollars or almost 10x's that price for the Jepp version. Thank god we have a free market with competition and monopolies are illegal.

The Government charts are subsidize by our taxes, Jepp is a a owned co. So the price may be more for the Gov charts. We all pay for them some how.

It is amazing that Jepp charts are 10 times more but they still sell, I myself have grown up with them and for me easier to read. I use both.

From where does Jepp get the information?

Yeah, but by purchasing them from Jeppeson, it would appear that we pay for the material TWICE.
Yes you would be paying twice. But because they present it in a better way, they sell their charts well. In reality the government charts may even cost more to produce then Jepp, it is our taxes pay most of the cost of them.
