Guess we're not going to stop LASP...

Got an email in my box today from FAASafety.gov offering a GA Security Training class at LZU near the end of this month. Usually it's for Wings program classes or other safety info. I see LZU is on the list of potentially affected airports.

Did anyone else get a similar notice? I see it's on a Friday morning at 8:30 AM, when the rabble-rousers are on their way to work. :mad3:

Description:
In an effort to continue our commitment to airport security, a General Aviation Security Training class has been scheduled at Gwinnett County Airport, presented by instructors from the Waukesha County Technical College, Waukesha, Wisconsin. Several homeland security publications and organizations have recognized this training as the best training currently available to general aviation.

Instructors from a college that has no aviation experience?
Interesting that it is short notice, 8:30am on a Friday.. when the "weekend" pilot will not be able to attend.

Is it "mandatory" attendance to get a security TSA Badge?

Unfortunately, some folks will roll over like a dog when the gov't says "Roll over." I'm starting to think that a 100 plane flight over the ADIZ or whatever it is won't help. Maybe a 10,000 plane flight from Zelienople to, say, Manteo NC?

We're loud, we're proud, and we're gonna fly ova' yo' city in a cloud!!

Sorry, it's March 27, not this Friday. I don't think it's required for a badge. It came from the FAAst Safety class part of the FAA Web site (usually Wings classes and such). There is not that much more info about the contents of the class.

Perfect. I have a friend whose plane has a rainbow stripe painted down the sides.

OMG... There's two of them!

A while back, there was a Cherokee 140 at RYV for sale with a similar rainbow paint scheme. That one had a rainbow spinner too!

As far as this - It may have nothing to do with LASP or the other new security measures. There has been "security training" for a long time at MSN, which is not mandatory in any way. However, when you DO do the training, they give you a key card to open the airport gate so you can drive your car out onto the ramp. Handy when going on long trips with lots of junk!

Well, to be fair, it was already painted that way when he bought it. Which just goes to show you can sell a plane with an ugly paint scheme.

LASP isn't a done deal yet. Flying Magazine reports that the chair of the House committee on homeland security is dissatisfied with it. Stand by for more.

I train at LZU. :mad2:

I'm just trying to figure out why they are bringing instructors from Waukesha, WI to GA??????

The TSA isn't accountable to anyone, least of all Congress. They'll implement it and have to be dragged away from it kicking and screaming.

Are we speaking of the same TSA that rented fifty-foot extension cords for $15/day, among other warped expenses, while interviewing for six weeks to fill the TSA jobs at Steamboat Springs?

Try operating a government agency with no money, or a mandate to spend nothing on a particular program. However, if you want to discuss that concept further, please take it to the Spin Zone.

You're assuming Congress would vote to defund TSA over it, or even that one program. I'm not at all sure that would happen.

Why? I've been told repeatedly that political posts about aviation are fair game here. Has that changed?

Yeah, I got the notice and signed up for the course at LZU. I spoke with a TSA inspector and she said that would count for CFI annual (recurrent) training. Fortunate since they're doing an audit on my flight school immediately aftwards.

Hey, Rich. A little on the boring side. I think they could have imparted all the material in a half day session instead of the full day they used.
