Soon to be out, new software for the G1000, 563.20
The new SW should be out in Oct or Nov, and it will allow DATA LOGING with the SD card in the top slot of the MFD,and use a program Garmin has on there website or use the CirrusRepots.com site to look and record the data, it will also let you upload and download flight plans.
If you have SVT the PATHWAYS will be enabled.
If you want to see what is downloaded (engine data, position, just like a Black Box Flight Data Recorder) you can check out the Pilots Guide from Garmin.

FWIW, the 321.22 software for the DA40 G1000 is already out and already has this logging feature. VERY cool, too!

We're starting to use all of the data collected on training flights in Purdue's new Cirrus fleet using this capability. It's really impressive considering it captures and records data every second.

So what do you use it for?
 
I've seen some cool software at OSH to take this sort of data and reconstruct the flight paths - can be combined with in-cockpit video recording for lesson replay. Looked like a very good teaching aid.
 
That is really cool. Much more comprehensive than what I get from our Avidyne.

I've written a program that analyzes what we get. The engine parameters are especially useful in our discussions of engine management as well as looking for problems.

If I had all the data Kent listed, we could do comparisons of performance against book values and fleet averages.

I can also imagine that complete data like that will be very useful in post-crash analysis, if it survives.

So what do you use it for?

I plan to look at it after my flights to make sure I'm properly managing the engine, check performance, and on training flights (I'm thinking my next IPC) it could come in very handy for looking at how the holds and approaches went.

It's just delightfully geeky, and I'm looking forward to taking advantage of it. :yes:
