I was flying to Fargo, ND a few weeks ago and had, I think, my funniest screwed up handoff. Normally when I screw up the next frequency it leads me to a silent unused one. Well this time an old voice answered back in all the static.

"Center, AIR 5540, level 350, good morning"

"Son, this is [blocked] Tower, I think you're a little high for me. Call me back when you boys want to do touch and go's."

The captain and I were so stunned by the reply back we couldn't stop laughing. I wrote down the error frequency but not yet been able to find the said tower.

The frequency is 132.4 MHz and we were somewhere between ORD and FAR. If anyone can figure out who it was that would be great. I'd like to see how far out that airfield was to us.

It's the tower at Anoka County Airport on the north side of St Paul/Minneapolis MN, 3 miles from me.
I forgot to add it's KANE.

Love it! I missed one a few months ago like 3 or 4 times eventually I responded with the classic controller response "sorry I was on the landline say again" the controller got a good chuckle out of it

About 20 years ago I was on a UA B-727 DEN-BUR. I was listening to 'Channel 9' and noticed it had been quiet for a while. Then I heard our crew try to call center a couple of times, with no response. After a short pause they called Grand Junction tower to politely ask for the Center freq for this sector ...

:)

I had an interesting exchange with xxxx tower about 11 years ago, when Diamonds were new around here. On callup, told him I was going to the radio shop and he cleared me to land on the taxiway. I asked him to confirm that and there was a looooong pause. "A Diamond is not a helicopter, is it?" "You better use 31". :D:wink2:

"Nor Cal...Skylane XYZ, level 6,5000"

"Southwest 12-43, Clear for takeoff Runway 30"

Wait, why would NorCal be issuing a takeoff...

DOH!

[redials correct frequency]

Heard on the scanner /LiveATC a few months back...

SLC center: Bizjet 123 contact Jackson tower 118.075

Bizjet123 : Jackson tower Bizjet 123 over Dunoir on the Zulu approach to 19

Jackson tower: Bizjet 123 report Final approach fix..

About 2 minutes later....

Bizjet 123:Jackson tower Bizjet 123, question...

Jackson tower: go ahead with your question...

Bizjet 123: Who in the hell came up with these bizzare fix names..

Jackson tower: Don't laugh,, they get harder as you get closer..

Uncontrollable laughter heard on the freq for the next couple of minutes.:lol::rofl::rofl:..

"Bug smasher 123 level flight level 7,000"

"Bug smasher 123 you are above my sector. Contact mission control in Houston"

(Didn't hear this myself but have heard of it... have heard people cleared to land on taxiways though and when the pilot asks to double check the tower says 'you are a helicopter right?' and the pilot says no)

Who is Miss ATC? :needpics:

Many, years ago (probably late 90s), I was departing the Cleveland area IFR after dark, talking with a moderately busy TRACON. The controller repeatedly called a Westwind with a clearance to descend from 5,000, which was never acknowledged.

After a few attempts and requesting that other aircraft attempt to contact the Westwind, the crew apparently found the correct frequency and checked in. The [female] controller calmly replied, "Westwind xxxxx, I still show you at 5,000 and that is REALLY not a good place to be right now!"

That's a good one.

From a buddy flying in MEM airspace after midnight back in the late 70s:

airliner: 'MEM xyz at 10,000'"
no reply
airliner: "MEM xyz at 10,000'"
no reply
few minutes go by
same voice: 'MEM Air Force 1"
MEM: quickly replying "calling MEM center say again"
airliner: ahh roger MEM, xyz at 10,000'
MEM: xyz roger, 10,000'

I would have loved to hear that one.

Anyone ever "Simon Says" you?

I've done that several times and found that it works every time.

Me - Hogger1 contact departure.
Silence
Me - Hogger1 contact departure.
Silence
Me - Hogger1 Simon says contact departure.
Hogger1 - Over to departure Hogger1

I've been told that it isn't "professional" but my response is that neither is not listening to the radio especially when you are expecting a call from ATC.

I've heard that one from ZDV. Wasn't for me, thank goodness. Haha.
