Fun airport for overnight in eastern Ohio?

I will be flying to NH from Phoenix in about a month so am looking for a fun airport to stop overnight in eastern - northeastern Ohio.

Suggestions?
 
I don’t know about the fun part, but I’ve always been treated well at 2G2 when I fly in there to visit family. Nice fbo. Not much of anything “fun” in eastern Ohio.
 
Can't think of anything more fun than Put in Bay Island. 3W2, no fuel available. They have golf carts though.

Love put in bay. It also closes at sunset due to no lights.
 
It's just over the river from Ohio in West Virginia, but Newlon (I41) is a nice grass field that has a restaurant and campground right there.

I don't any suggestions, but it sounds like a fun trip. How many hours a day do you plan to fly? Are you going to overnight during the trip? All the long cross country flying I have done have been time critical and I never had a chance to view the sites as I traveled. It sure would be nice to fly 3 or 4 hours then spend the day enjoying the local attractions. Continue the next day..

Spearfish, SD is fun you can go into Lead. Fly around Mt Rushmore. Stop a Custer State park. It's just a little out of your way but great sites

I probably should have been more specific. We will likely be flying 8 hours one day and 4 the next, though have some flexibility on that. It is a one night stop so fun for me would be an interesting airport, historically or in terms of the facilities, with good food and a place to sleep nearby.

I also frequent 2G2, but the Hampton is a dump, the Microtel is OK, and the Best Western is nice but almost impossible to get in to (plus you have to be comfortable with a portrait of a nun in habit on your bedroom wall, and right wing literature in each room... hotel is owned by the Catholic university across the street...)

But... the cab comes from West Virginia, and the waits are long. No more courtesy car, so if the cab guy takes a day off, you need to call relatives for a ride.

If you don't have relatives there, maybe you can call Salty's, or mine?

Thanks for the PIREP. I don't stay in a hotel there so I didn't know the situation. I'm not surprised though.

With that definition of fun, I would use BKL. Lots of food and hotel options nearby, and it’s as close to landing at Meigs as you can get these days.

The only other thing that pops as interesting and would have food and lodging nearby is checking out the blimp hangar at AKR.
 
Although I've been to many of the airports in Ohio - including eastern Ohio - these days I consider it flyover (or more like drive-over) country. Something about relatives in SW Ohio giving gifts that are too large or heavy to bring back in an airplane (meaning a lot of time in traffic around Columbus).

BKL would be my recommendation - it's downtown, so easy access to the R&R HOF, NFL and MLB stadiums, and decent hotels and food. The Chillicothe area has Indian mounds, but is harder to deal with ground transport and hotels. Wooster has a college and a few decent feeding holes, the airport (Wayne County) is a bit away, though, and transportation is header (farm country). Canton has the Pro Football HOF and one of the past presidential museum - rental car may be the better option.
 
Psssh. Don't listen to these schmucks. Do you like wine? I mean GOOD wine? Madison is where movie stars come for wine tasting when they're in Cleveland. My old friend Tony Debevc has won awards from coast to coast, including Napa, California. The industry he started here in 1972 in a grape vineyard has blossomed with competitors, so many that even a wine tour can't get to them all. You'll have to stay longer!

Interested in covered bridges? There's a bunch in Ashtabula County, like 19 of them. One was built in the 1980s and is 124 feet long. I think it is one of the longest, IIRC. There are tours for those too.

As for an airport, HZY is in the country, but has plenty of runway. You'll need to work out a car rental with management:

Here's your "alternate" instructions: Land at Lost Nation (LNN) and dine and browse downtown Willoughby. No problem getting a car there, I hope. The airport is managed by a huge car dealer, the Classic Auto Group. The owner has a Learjet or two.

Have some wine, see the lake, tour the wineries, eat outside, avoid the city. Most all of these places have live music. Even the covered bridges have soothing sounds of flowing water. Hope you enjoy your stay! :)

PS: Tony has a private grass strip behind his winery and owns a Stearman and Staggerwing Beech. Just sayin'... Tell him Dave sent ya. (Call first—don't know if it's long enough, smooth enough or public enough.)

One of the best things about Ohio is that it's close to West Virginia. :) (true!)
 
I've spent time at New Philadelphia, Ohio. Nice little airport. You've got the quaint Tuscora Park (sort of a depression-era theme park) and the Schoenbrunn Ampitheter (home to the Trumpet in the Land extravaganza and other performances).

Then you've got Hunington which is technically WV, but it sits on the border of Ohio, Kentucky and WV.
 
You can leave Ohio on any course and return without turning or going 'round the world. Well, you "can". I read it on a paper place mat. A lot of people don't know this.
