Getting time to re-up Forflight; and the price is a little staggering, I am looking at options with some of the other EFB on the market. Few folks at our local dog patch are using iFlightPlanner as an alternative.

Has anyone here made the same transition? Thoughts, comments, concerns?

Thanks

Compared to paper charts…. It’s a bargain. I don’t like the monopoly either, but….

Yeah, I think we're getting to the point of paper charts being far enough in the past that some people have forgotten what an expensive headache that system was. We're paying less now for "charts" than we used to, and have these absolutely amazing pieces of software that are more capable than an flight support office, round gauges, weather stations and flight following were combined 20 years ago.

Sure $125 is better than $195. But perspective does put a sugar coating on all the pills.

I know I am in a tiny minority, but I use FlyQ and love it!

You're not the only one, I picked up a lifetime subscription of flyQ and it's my primary efb. Backed up by iflygps.

iFlightPlanner might be the only US EFB I haven't tried.

For me, the question is VFR vs IFR.

VFR, I really don't care. All I need are charts and an AFD. I think FlyQ is a great VFR option because, like ForeFlight, they have georeferenced airport diagrams for most every airport, including those the FAA don't publish one for, but at their base subscription level (old enough to remember the little brown Flight Guide? the successors to those charts).

IFR is a different story. I want robust flight planning and a an in-flight flow I am used to. If I hadn't been using Foreflight for a dozen years (anniversary in 2 weeks) I would take a good look at Garmin Pilot and IFlyGPS for both features and support. Pilot has, as @Rgbeard points out, an advantage for Garmin panel fliers, including a consistent interface.

Things that matter: VFR/IFR, Garmin panel interface, preflight planning only, or in flight navigation, ADS-B integration, other features like W&B and logs, the hassle factor of learning a new system.

In my case, I fly IFR, want W&B, really like georeferenced charts, and want the EFB to interface with the Garmin panel. As far as I can tell, this combination is only available with GP at $210 or FF at $240. Since I’ve been using FF for a long time, avoiding the hassle factor of learning a new interface is worth $30, so I stick with FF.

If I wanted to fly VFR only, as cheaply as possible, I’d preflight with fltplan and use FltPlanGo on the iPhone in flight.

What Data subscription do you have from Garmin? If you get one of the "paks" (pilotpak or onepak), the cost of the GP upgrade is free. So you only pay for base GP at around $100 this year.

They sure don't make that easy to understand. I'll have to see. Thanks.

We used the Flightstream in my prior club - there wasn't an issue with FF talking to Garmin then? Has something changed?

iFly has a free 90 day trial. Why not check it out?

I didn't even wait the 90 days. I borrowed a 740 tried it on one flight, and bought my own as soon as I got back.
